Camberley/Blackwater excess fare

This is more of a theoretical question as the difference is only 5p, but tomorrow I will be leaving from Blackwater to Wokingham (with railcard, after noon). The off-peak return is £3.55.

If I wanted to return to Camberley, an evening out return would have been £3.95, so any excess would be 40p. However, would this be allowed or would I have to excess to the same ticket type (off-peak return at £5.70)? Obviously I could just buy the evening out return to start with since the difference is only 40p, just wondered what the excess rules here are.

I don't think you would have difficulty obtaining an excess merely because the new fare you want has a different ticket type. If there's a problem it would likely be because the member of staff in question is unable or unwilling to sell you an 'overdistance' excess that is, in fact, a "change of destination". You might have a little more success obtaining an excess to North Camp, which at £4.65 for an Off-Peak Day Return actually costs less than the same ticket to Camberley (and is valid via Ascot to Ash Vale).

Interesting, I'd never noticed that it was valid via Ascot as far as Ash Vale (or indeed Frimley), thanks! I knew it wasn't valid as far as Ash Vale if travelling to London, but hadn't considered the routeings for travelling towards Wokingham.

My concern was how would they know that I hadn't travelled prior to midday for the outbound part of the journey, before excessing to a ticket that would have invalidated the outbound journey... or is this not relevant?

Good point on the change of destination part though, I'd forgotten it's only (normally) allowed if changing destination as opposed to origin.

I don't think you would have any more difficulty obtaining the excess because it's a different ticket type, but that shouldn't be taken to mean that obtaining an overdistance excess can be assumed to be a simple matter. I think you would be well advised to buy a ticket that covers all of your potential travel at the outset.
