I’ve done both solo indie dev (only as a side project) and worked as part of dev teams at large companies. I’ve considered freelance a few times but never made the jump yet

Sure do - I'm (primarily) a C++ developer with a background in engineering. It's very rewarding and I've ended up doing some pretty amazing stuff.

I’ve spent over 30 years working in engineering software development, firstly in the oil and gas industry, and latterly in rail, but have now moved on from code development (c++) to preparing and running simulations. I use our in-house integrated simulation tool which models all aspects of railway operation - trains, signalling, timetables, power etc. Interesting and rewarding but requires much attention to detail.

Currently doing a Computer Science and Electronic Engineering course at Uni.

Mainly program in JS and Python, occasionally Haskell, and have done C# previously.

In education so programming is for that and a couple of side projects I occasionally work on.

If you don't already work in the rail sector, if a relevant job cropped up that was in rail, would you consider it?

If the job was good, almost definitely yes. Nice way to combine interests and has far fewer mass layoffs than the tech sector.

I thought I had replied to this thread previously, but obviously just read it.

I'm a programmer by training, but I've never done it for profit. I'll mess around with PHP and JavaScript as needs be to build tools here and there to solve little problems at work though. The most recent example was calling the MS Graph API from JS to send a mail merge because Word doesn't let you send a mail merge "on behalf of" another user.

I've been a programmer for 30 years. Most recent work is in C#, but have done java and web development work in the distant past so my knowledge there isn't entirely up to date but I've spent plenty of time picking up new stuff in that 30 years and can do so fairly quickly.

Would certainly be potentially interested in railway related roles.

I am not a developer, I did study it at university but I ended up more in the IT support line of business before getting more involved in digital media. In terms of software development I have played around a bit with creating my own WordPress theme and I understand MySQL/PHP and LAMP in genera but I am rusty now. I occasionally have to produce websites for work so I just take an existing WP theme and heavily modify the CSS to make look how I want.

My main area of expertise would be accessibility, I know quite a bit about that and I am continuously learning. I have reached the stage in my 40's though that I don't think I will ever properly get into software development now. Modern multi stack workflows are just getting a bit too complicated, in my day it was Notepad (actually I would have used a proper IDE of some sort), PHP, HTML, CSS, and SQL. I would do everything from scratch (probably badly!) and also learnt C#.NET when it was brand new but haven't touched that for decades. The main issue with modern development is you have to learn the languages, then the libraries, and stuff like GIT etc. The last 'proper' programming I did was programming the Arduino as I used to make a lot of electronics projects during lockdown.

I would quite like to get into the user interface design and accessibility testing side of things though.

I did my masters in data science and I am currently in a volunteering role as a data scientist. I work with Python along with data analysis tools like SQL, Excel, PowerBI and so on. I am quite interested in the rail industry especially TFL. So I would be totally open to considering a data role in TFL.

Not sure how I've managed to miss this thread previously! I'm nudging up towards a quarter-century in software engineering. I've had a variety of roles from developer, tech lead, architect, site reliability engineer to my current role which is product manager for two large (computer) infrastructure projects. I occasionally still moonlight as SRE when time allows.

I tend to do the talking now, whilst others are responsible for the typing Java (and other JVM languages) most consistently through my career, as well as some C/C++, Python and a few others I may admit to under duress.
