This used to be very common on services between Perth and Inverness / Edinburgh and Aberdeen
On the Aberdeen the train would split with the Class 158 continuing to Inverness

Still is but the 158 is just dumped

Out of Glasgow I know the 1740 Aberdeen (as far as Perth) and 1748 Dunblane service are still 170+158 combo's (not sure if the 1718 Alloa still is or if it is now 170x2)

There are quite a few out of Edinburgh, not visited in the peak recently but a lot of Aberdeen service get dumped in Dundee. I think the Carnoustie service is the same.

There seems to be more 158s on Edinburgh to Inverness runs than Glasgow. Ive seen 170 plus 156 and 170 plus 150 .

That was the strangest multiple unit formation I've ever seen.

The strangest formation I've seen while was two 313s and a 317 coupled together on the Hertford line, still good to hear you had a good time, :)

I went to Perth the other week from Edinburgh on a 158, and back on a 170. No comparsion. 158s are waaaaaay better for this sort of middle to long distance working. The 170 frankly was pants.

Talking of unusual DMU formations, take a look at the latest issue of Railway Herald, issue 246 (http://www.railwayherald.com/magazine/) and skip through to page 21 which has a 150 leading a 3 car 158, made up of 3 driving units, ie, no centre coach. Not super unusual but the strangest thing ive seen for a while.

Sorry for wandering off topic.

FGW have a few of those "hybrid" 3 car 158s. Much like LM have similar 150s made from 1.5 2 car units.

Unlikely to happen, but permanent conversions to 3 car formation would make for an ideal "long distance" fleet for Scotrail post central belt electrification. Six car trains, with through-corridors, and end-vestibule doors, running to Inverness and Aberdeen? Would be far too sensible...

The southbound services from Inverness in the afternoon, especially the tea time services to Edinburgh and Glasgow need far more than the 2 x 158s or 170, they are like sardine tines and half the time its like a sweat box because the air con is not working.

I usually travel up on the Caledonian Sleeper but like to come back in the daytime to see the lovely scenery along the Highland mainline, but its just unbearable on the currant service. This time we are coming back on the Chieftain, so hopefully that won't be to bad!

There are some 6 car 158 services (or were earlier this year at least) that head North over the Forth Bridge, don't know how far they go though.

There will be very little demand to make such fleet modifications
The current proposal is to reduce the DMU fleet to Class 156 and 170 on completion of electrification
Class 156 will cover GSW and WHL
Class 170 will cover the remaining routes (although there are issues over using Class 170 between Aberdeen - Inverness, and north of Inverness)
During the next franchise a replacement for the Class 156 will also be required
Several options are being explored which includes a new express DMU (also 3 car) which would then cascade the Class 170 to replace the Class 156
The main issue is the WHL, this will be the base requirement

Think I saw this exact hybrid in Bath last week. Reminded me of the days of Central when their sparse 158 fleet was shuffled around to make a handful of three car units (they didn't have enough to simple double them up).

Apparently FGW currently have 1 "proper" 3-car, 10 "hybrids" and 5 2-car- with the plan being to turn those 5 2-car into 3 hybrids (plus a spare car)? Northern have the other eight "proper" 3-cars, plus a further 8 ex-Transpenine were turned into 159s.

No, not normally
Normal practice is for a Class 158 southbound, which then joins up with a Class 170
Northbound the 158 is at the front, then continues to Inverness

Thought I had a 170 from Inverness to Aberdeen on Thursday afternoon and a 170 at Inverness waiting to go there on Sunday morning as well.

Several services between Aberdeen and Inverness are normally operated by Class 170s.

Diagrams here: http://www.scot-rail.co.uk/page/Diagrams:Class+170+SX

Don't think there are any 158s that work into Aberdeen from the south (certainly not M-F).
