5M11 currently sat outside Rugby seems to be a 66 pulling a 92 and sleeper set.

What's the story? Or is this the wheel flat set being repositioned?

RTT shows 1M11, the Glasgow & Edinburgh to London Euston sleeper as having been terminated at Preston 'due to a fault with the traction equipment'.

Presumably 5M11 is recovering the stock.

Well, understandably, 1M16 arrived Euston 57 minutes late this morning on the WTT timings at 08:44. But in a brilliant move CS Control VSTP'd the pubic arrival time to 09:00 so (lo-and-behold!) it appeared to be 16 minutes early. If only Avanti could be as flexible.
Shame they couldn't make sure that the public times for Perth and onwards were changed to be an hour later. People waiting for the Sleeper there and stations south were directed to an RTT link by Caledonian Sleeper's service updates page. RTT, of course, didn't have any details of the diversion so until the train reported at Perth was merrily suggesting that train would call at 2323 (as the last report was the 24 minutes early it passed Millburn Junction at Inverness). Of course because of the diversion it actually called at 0028. A long cold wait for some (unless the waiting room was open?)!

Is there a proper waiting room at Perth!?

I've only ever encountered a few bus stop-style shelters at that station, positioned on a couple of the platforms.

Genuinely curious, as I've used Perth several times but never noticed a bona fide waiting room.

There definitely was a dedicated sleeper waiting room, we were put in there once when we had a replacement bus from Inverness to connect into the stock, dunno if it still there but it was only a few years ago

This is normal in Scotland when speed restrictions occur, and happened to all services running north of Aberdeen, see here: https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:Y38517/2026-01-22/detailed

Notably, they only change the arrival time.

I'm sure I read that CS got rid of the lounges at Perth and Stirling not that long ago.

I was going off of the Scotrail website rather than any personal knowledge!

Lounges and waiting rooms
Waiting roomsYes
Seating areaYes

Ah well you see, that would be passenger friendly. An understandable rookie mistake to make!

I really do need to work on the taste for luxuries like accurate information that I've developed don't I?

At Perth there's a proper waiting room between platforms 4 and 5. I was using it yesterday morning waiting for the delayed 0959 to King's Cross.
Benches aren't too uncomfortable and it is heated.
Platforms 1 and 2 have the bus shelter style waiting areas.

Caledonian sleeper have closed all their lounges except Inverness (located at their offices outside the station) and Euston.
Only shelters at Perth are bus stop style shelters on platforms 1 and 2 and a small room between platforms 4 and 5. All the waiting areas have heaters.
It's a shame the hotel across the car park isn't open to the public anymore, would be ideal for a pint whilst waiting.

There is also Fort William.

A bit of an old request.

On 21st March 2023 We went to Glasgow on the lowland sleeper.
1S42 hauled by 92043.

Please can anyone confirm the route it took (It will probably be on RTT if anyone has that).

This would have been when the Carstairs Engineering work was being done.

Euston to Carstairs.
From Carstairs we went, as far as I can make out, via Midcalder Jn, Slateford, Haymarket in to Edinburgh.

The portion from Edinburgh to Glasgow Central is am a little fuzzy on.
Did it go:
Edinburgh via Shotts and in to Glasgow Central?

Thanks in advance,

It went via Falkirk Grahamston, Cumbernauld, Coatbridge Central and Kirkwood, before rejoining the lines into the main station shed at Rutherglen Central Jn.

Quite the tour!

Footage of the closed lounges:

I think at Inverness I'd just go to the Royal Highland Hotel next door. Closer, and probably much comfier (never actually been in).

I used the Stirling lounge. Late at night, it was very welcome space but an expensive service to provide

It is, but the drinks are not free. We have been re-directed there more than once because the lounge was full, despite supposedly, as Club passengers*, having priority in the lounge.

* At our age, an ensuite toilet is worth paying extra for

Do we know if there's been much uptake on services to/from Birmingham since the change?
Seeing as Cally hasn't put out any sort of celebratory announcement about how much more uptake there's been since serving Birmingham, I don't think it's an especially high amount.

I'm using the Cally next weekend to go from Glasgow down to Birmingham, but honestly it seems like a bit of a waste, as it's scarcely 6 hours worth of sleep when breakfast etc is taken into account. Also, the lack of a lounge at Birmingham Intl is a real mark against.

Next time around, it'll probably be more time-efficient to book the Lowlander, change onto the first northbound service for Birmingham, and arrive at the office after a decent night's sleep. Ideally, there needs to be an option for either a lie-in at Birmingham, or lounge access arranged with AWC.

Yeah, 6 hours of sleep isn't great but I'd say its better than an early morning flight around 7am from Glasgow. My main issue is the arrival time in Birmingham. I haven't looked up the scheduled arrival time but it must be around 6am or maybe erven slightly earlier?

That's too early to be of any real use to anyone unless you are just going back home and not to an event at the NEC or the office.

Not only were the Dundee, Leuchars and Stirling an expensive service to provide but also appeared very lightly used, as whenever I used these 3 lounges I had the Stirling lounge to myself (in the morning) and only ever 2-3 other passengers in the Dundee/Leuchars lounges (in the evening). On more than one occasion the Leuchars lounge was closed in the evening making it not worth turning up earlier to use the lounge as there are not really any suitable alternatives like at Inverness if the lounge was closed.
When this is compared to the Inverness/Fort William/London Euston lounges which are always busy when I use them it is understandable why these lounges were closed, despite the useful offering (toilets, showers, drinks) they provided.

20 past 6 in the morning, which is definitely a bit too early imo. Ideally, there should be an option to lie in or spend some time in the AWC lounge to make it worthwhile.

Next time I do this trip, I think I'll just book into Euston, and consider hopping off at Watford if it looks too touch-and-go for arrival into Euston in time to make 9S47 back to New Street.

It's not really intended for journeys between the central belt & Birmingham though is it? It has after all been introduced as a stop on the Highlander not Lowlander.

If you travel outside peak times they do sometimes do offers on the Club rooms, we managed to bag two for us and our two kids for an extra £20 last year for the southbound journey. Wouldn’t normally do that as it’s expensive enough as it is, but having the en-Suite and getting brekkie was nice! Didn’t bother with the lounge, just got dropped off at Inverness fairly late and got our kids to their beds!
