Even Premier Inns in London at short notice can top £200.
I regularly book hotel rooms for freelancers at my work. Kings Cross Premier Inn four months in advance was £195 a night for this coming September. Without breakfast.

Same hotel for the same dates and the same rate (admittedly fully flexible, we get this as standard with a business account) is currently showing as £248 - it's still two months away!

The other Premier Inns nearby (St Pancras and Euston) were about the same - I think Euston was maybe £15 a night cheaper but has no air con and looks like it needs a lot of modernisation.

I've booked premier inn Islington at 2200 when ECML was blocked for £125

I grabbed a hotel in Mayfair for somewhere between £270-280 when I had an LNER cancellation once and it was paid fine.

Ah, just realised this is the same post I mentioned in earlier :D

The statement only mentions the highlander, and the three southbound portions will all run to Edinburgh. But there’s no mention of the lowlander being cancelled, so all a bit baffling.

All the northbound and southbound Highlanders are cancelled tonight due to "a line closure caused by emergency engineering works", according to the Sleeper website.
I can't find anything online stating what the nature or location of said emergency engineering works is.
Anybody know?
Maybe related to the cracked crossing at Carnforth? North bound trains are having to run via the goods loop and back onto the mainline.

RTT is showing the up lowlander as a VVR schedule to arrive Euston at 08.15 tomorrow. Currently, the down lowlander is not showing any alterations.

Passengers can remain onboard the northbound sleeper overnight at Euston and southbound at Edinburgh where that train will terminate. Forward travel the following morning on other operators trains.

sorry if I’m being thick, but if the lowlander can run throughout and the highlander can get from the north into Edinburgh, why can’t the highlander continue to London?

Wouldn't that affect the Lowlander too?
Could it be that a possesion has to be taken at the time the Highlanders would be passing, but would be clear when the lowlanders pass?

Even if its only one of the Highlanders directly affected, you would have to cancel both so that stock is in place for both workings tomorrow night.

RTT shows (only) the northbound Highlander cancelled. This is the first of the four to pass through the carnforth area (at 0058)
The s/b Lowlander passes at 0238, and the other two pass each other a little north of Carnforth shortly before 0400

Looking at RTT for Carnforth N.Jn. for the early hours of tomorrow, if the possession requires to Up line blacked (which I would expect to be the case) there appears to be a window between 1M11, due past at 02.30, or 03.02 if 4M30 from Grangemouth to Daventry is running in booked path and 06.30 when 1R22, 04.28 Glasgow to Euston is due, providing 1M16 is absent. This is due to pass at 04.02 so it would be highly advantageous for this train not to be running.

I guess that a potential 2.5 hour retiming at this short notice is unacceptable to CS, Network Rail, especially at the southern end of the WCML. and stuffs the crewing of 1M16 beyond what is reasonable.

Northbound Highlander went through Stirling about 0630. RTT says ECS.
This can't be the stock scheduled to work the n/b Highlander last night, as that was still at Euston. Presumably the stock off the southbound highlander, which got as far as Edinburgh, returning to Inverness ready to form tonight's service.

It is the closure at Carnforth, apparently, and closure(s) such that they hit the up and down Highlands Sleepers but not the Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Looks like the closure was much earler, and was for five and a half hours, not one and a half, and prevented the n/b Highlander running rather than the s/b

RTT shows no trains running through Carnforth North Junction between 2230 (the 2220 Lancaster to Barrow) and 0355 (the s/b Lowlander, running about 90 minutes late, having been held at Oxenholme. The northbound was delayed at Preston, presumably awaiting the s/b to allow crew changeover

The northbound highlander was due to pass at 0058, right in the middle of that period. The southbound is due at 0400, shortly after the line reopened, but running it without the balancing n/b would have left no stock in the Highlands to form tonight's services, not to mention crew being displaced.

If I had been on the southbound Highlander sleeping in Edinburgh station I would have been very annoyed at having got ejected very early then in order for it to go back north
As would I. I saw the stock shunting around Aberdeen station at around 08:00 and wondered what was it was doing.

I'd like to think Guests passengers were offered the choice between taking that option or using LNER direct this morning from Inverness or Aberdeen. Not that the Southbound from Inverness has done much better![/S]

RTT shows the three northbound portions leaving Waverley between 05.24 and 05.54. Presumably by then, those passengers wanting to be in London as close as possible to their planned arrival time would be catching the 05.40 LNER to King's Cross.

Leisure travellers might indeed not be happy though.

They may have been given the option of spending the night in a hotel and travelling south the next day

This happened to me last month, we were all woken up at 0430 with the train still in Edinburgh due to an engine fault and advised to catch the 0540 to Kgx.
That train was involved in a fatality near Newcastle and the train arrived in London at noon.
Fortunately I headed back home on the first ScotRail train from Edinburgh at 0530 as was just a leisure trip.
