Why GBRf? These are stock issues we're talking about, not traction...

If you take a look at the losses Serco are making this year running the old stock past its sell-by date and other operational challenges (approx. £20-25m loss in total) any Delay Repay on a few delayed services is a small fraction of that.

An interesting night last night, sat for 1.5hrs at Dalwhinnie before traincrew declared to us the train was failed, all of us in the seats were upgraded to a shared berth which was good of them.

Arrived in Edinburgh at 0630 and told to get on the 0656 LNER service to Kings X, to which after getting comfortable was told to get off by the guard as the service was already heavily booked and could not take us. Then advised to get the 0700 XC service to Reading and make it up from there. I went and spoke to the guard of the 0652 VT to Euston who was more than happy to convey us.

If anyone could ID the Thunderbird it would be much appreciated.

Was it possible to refuse the “upgrade”?

I would never want to share a berth with a stranger, and would always choose the seats over that option.

I dont know, they seemed pretty keen to get us out the seats as they didn't know how long we were going to be stuck for.

73968 rescued you - from Polmadie via Mossend for a drink.

67015 TBird at Craigentinny was not feasible as it’s there primarily for LNER services and is only crewed until c2300.

Wow, there's the not-at-all-joined-up railway in full customer-unfriendly mode. I can't believe anyone seriously suggested the XC route, which wouldn't get you to Paddington until 13:52 (13:37 if you made a 3 minute connection at Reading). What use is that to someone who needed to be in London at 8 a.m.? Plus by that time there will have been several earlier arrivals via the ECML.

Even a full refund wouldn't really compensate anyone whose planned day has been ruined.

Noticed on realtime trains the southbound the Lowland sleeper was 19 minutes late after Carstairs, picked up on time south of Preston though arrived in Euston 23 minutes early, northbound sleeper was slightly delayed as well again at Carstairs, managed to arrive on time at both Edinburgh & Glasgow.

Surely all these coupling issues indicate lack of trials splitting and joining the the new stock,too much hotel on wheels and not enough railway nous!

AFAIK there exists a type of coupler called the Buckeye, I think it's been used in the UK at least since the 1930s, so should be well-tested, that is also compatible with existing hook and chain couplers, and rarely causes issues with coupling to other stock (since the hook and chain can be used in an emergency). Wonder why they didn't go for those isntead of these fancy MU couplers...

I'm assuming it's all shrouded in commercially sensitive secrecy, but if there are the coupling issues taking empties away, I guess these coupling issues related to the loco couplings rather than inter-coach - taking empties from Glasgow should just be adding a loco and drawing away.

Further assuming that the Dellner's themselves aren't an issue, the fault seems to point to TMS issues. Does anyone know if a loco "mod-kit" was created/certified by CAF (for installation at Brush) that should(?) guarantee loco compatibility with coaching stock, or is the issue that two vendors had to create solutions to a spec and they aren't (yet) 100% compatible?

The desire not to wake sleeping passengers up with the jolt...

Also wanting to reduce the work needed during coupling/uncoupling particularly as regards cabling and air pipes.

Dellner couplers are very reliable in general hence it is little surprising CS is having issues.

I’ve seen plenty of issues, including couplers sheared and twisted every which way during attachments and detachments. They are particularly susceptible to any sort of debris hitting them as well. It doesn’t tend to make forum news, though, I’ll give you that!

With that single line from Inverness to Edinburgh plus the service I wanted was full I have got the return journey for me and my 13 year old from Glasgow to London. So will have to get a single from Inverness to Glasgow to make that sleeper that night.

Regarding being told there was no seats on the lner I would have asked if we could have stood the whole way back.

Sorry if dosent make sense.

I wouldn't have fancied standing all the way Edinburgh to London, regardless of the issues with the sleeper

Regarding the coupling issues, they've spent months testing the new stock, could they have tried coupling/uncoupling then, to iron out any problems, same with the rest of the new stock.

Sorry, yes, of course... I somehow read it the wrong way round... of course they wouldn't be moving a set of 3s towards Wembley for any other reason would they...?

Having said that... has the other rake I was thinking of already been moved back up north or is it parked up at Wembley out of use?
