That's what always concerns me, being from the Midlands and having to travel somewhere to join the sleeper, i'd rather go south to Euston rather than up to Crewe as there is the notion that there would be more information available at Euston in the event of disruption (I know that's not always the case though)

Thankfully the volume has been turned down so folk in the seats no longer know that the door is opening and that it is unlocked.

This is the standard approach on an East Coast night - it allows the Edinburgh crew to do their preparation and checks before passenger boarding and at least in theory allows passengers on the train at an earlier time.

In the reverse direction the Edinburgh portion is detached to allow passengers to stay in their berths to the usual times.

Both trains have delay minutes down to loco/stock. Euston start on the northbound and all sorts of palava in Scotland around train supply on the other.

1S26 arrived at Edinburgh marshalled the wrong way round (i.e. Edinburgh coaches leading) so the Glasgow portion has had to depart via the Sub.

Great to see the Mk5's running at last, I've a trip booked Euston-Fort William in late June (Club room solo en-suite) so hope the stock is ready by then for the Highlander.

Shame there have been problems on launch night for the Lowlander. Hindsight is a great thing and no doubt CS had their reasons, but was it the best idea to launch on a night when they were running off the normal route?

As you would expect there are fairly senior people from Caledonian Sleeper on the trains tonight. Apparently they were trying to find a way of getting trains to Edinburgh without having to get through the problems east of Carstairs as early as mid-afternoon yesterday as there had been a problem for most of the day. Network Rail refused other routes.

To get them out of Polmadie. The route via Rutherglen shut for track renewals.

Planned engineering.....as I asked, was it the best night to launch knowing there was work going on?

As we all know only too well, on the railway any number of things can go wrong at any time, but at least control the controlables!

Remember the Labour Party conference fiasco in Blackpool (1997 or 1998?) when it all haywire due to planned engineering on the Sunday most delegates were travelling north? The Bearded One famously said "we f***d up, we f***d up badly" and the ex BR WCML boss said rather arrogantly, that he would have made sure there was no planned engineering that weekend and had his best staff on duty....

Secretary of State ‘for’ Scotland - he’ll have been there to ensure it wasn’t forgotten that Westminster contributed to the rolling stock.

Perhaps the health warning should be extended…

Moving swiftly on though, save for delays and some reported technical faults (on CS Facebook), it seems the launch was quite well received. The proof in the pudding perhaps is how successful service will be over this week?

A colleague booked on tonight from Dunblane but advised it was delayed 1.25 hours so he has canceled and booked a flight instead , reason given , vague but to do with last nights delays ?? I assume this is the old stock anyway

1S25 was delayed waiting a driver at Newcastle then again by a train supply fault at Edinburgh, eventually terminated at Inverness just over three hours minutes late. The departure of 1M16 tonight has been put back to allow for minimum crew rest between turns.

It seems the s-bound highlander has been sat in Euston much of the day with 92044(?) declared a failure and having to be rescued.

Ah Fair enough. Or is it ? Whilst you cant expect exhausted staff to work, but I wonder if some flexibility could be granted , for the sake of one hours less kip , the crew could be motivated to stick to timetable given the passenger should always be put first on the railways . Regulations I accept can be safety critical , but some scope for flexibility ?

How would a "motivated" crew have dealt differently with a signalling failure? It's totally beyond the control of anyone on the train.

The minimum rest periods are there for good reason. History is littered with examples of disasters in transport and industry due to people working longer hours than is sensible, with not enough rest.
Ensuring the crew are properly rested, safe to perform their duties and are not sleep deprived and grumpy is putting the passenger first, IMO.
