Hi all,

If I only ever travel on the Caledonian sleeper once, which journey should I take, and when would be the best time of year to take this journey?

Many thanks.

Definitely Fort William in June when it's light so early.

Inverness is good too and more to do when you get there but Fort William is probably better scenic wise.

London > Fort William. Then carry on to Mallaig, Isle of Skye, Kyle of Lochalsh and finally Inverness. Then return to London on the Inverness sleeper.

And definiately the end of June for the most light.

And get a room. Don't use the seats. If you do, go in the daytime instead.

I echo the advice to book early.

A few of us went on the sleeper two years ago, and both the Inverness and Fort William portions were sold out eight weeks in advance, so don't leave it too late.

Was Edinburgh (South Sub) but more Strathspey now.
Can't argue with Fort William but Inverness is an attractive alternative.

Best done in summer to enjoy the views. Sunset from Aviemore station (where I used to frequently join/alight) can be memorable, and to be woken as the train passes Loch Garry is life enhancing.

Another advantage of the Highland sleepers is the departure time, far more civilised than the edinburgh/ Glasgow route (which I now use) and allowing for a most relaxing drink before bedtime.
