Permanent nightshift with a shift on your own at Carstairs station included as well that is usually a 4/6 days a week. Will be a 6 man roster.

Job involves everything from coupling locos on/off coupling/uncoupling coaches too, brake testing, plus other roles.

No Saturday night work though as the sleepers don't run on Saturdays. If you can sacrifice your social/family life during the week then every Saturday night off is your carrot.

Are Scotrail drivers still contracted to operate it from Glasgow to Fort William, or do GBRF crew it throughout now? If GB, does anyone know which depot does the work? Thanks.

GB provide drivers for all sleepers now. Ft William depot and Edinburgh/Polmadie men I believe.

We stopped driving the Sleeper in March 2015. Guards only just being replaced with Serco guards just now.

Thats not a shunter as in lifting buckeye couplings or doing brake tests and stuff. Its for moving trains around the depot and will almost certainly be EMU's and not DMU's like the description state. Will be mostly night shift as there will be nothing there during the day as most trains will be in service .

Lots of internal staff going for these as many live outside Edinburgh and this is better located for some.

Yeah I thought there would be internal ones, I live close by.

I Don't have high hopes like as I don't think light rail experience with be enough, and coupling two trams together is different from trains, but I can still chance my luck I suppose.

Agency staff DO NOT get used as shunters at Edinburgh. This is a safety critical role with huge responsibility. It takes considerable training. Sometimes the GBRf drivers will couple their own train up to help the shunters. Not often though.

As has been stated in a previous post, Agency Staff are used at Aberdeen.
At several other locations Freight shunting has been "out sourced"
It is a sad fact that these things are happening in the continual "race to the bottom" for terms and conditions in the privatised rail industry.
Many vacancies go unfilled and the jobs are filled on a week to week basis by staff on Part Time and Zero hours contracts, paid less than going rate for the job.
They are properly trained and competent, but remain what we would, in the past, class as "Agency Staff"
