There haven't been any broken rails in Scotland today (Sunday 7th). There was a very minor derailment at Inverness depot on Saturday morning when a sleeper coach was being shunted but that was all sorted by 22:45 that night.
My info comes from what we were told by a scotrail staff member at the ticket gate plus my unofficial evesdropping on a serco staff member who seemed to imply that the problem was one that had to be sorted by someone other than serco. Who knows what the true story is.

No, Many years ago the Fort William sleeper used to be detaching from the Euston to Inverness sleeper at Mossend then tripped to Queen St to be attached to the 06.00 Queen St to Fort William service. This could produce any available traction from Mossend and I once had a 20 on it ( how many sleeper services had 20's). The Fort William service conveyed a Resturant Car from Queen St and we renowned for serving the finest breakfast on the Network
Reading this, and the other comment about sleeper cars being shunted onto the mallaig service at fort william, brings into light how stripped back the service now, and the rather pitiful failure to integrate it with connections. On arrival at fort william now, you are turfed out and have to wait for over two hours before the next train to mallaig - and once you get there, in the winter, it's another two hour wait for the ferry over to skye. There's no attempt to coordinate the train and ferry times. Last summer there were the complaints about Skye being overrun with tourist traffic. How about encouraging more people to come by public transport, instead of putting obstacles in their way.

Just going back to last night's late departure from Inverness, I've had a different story from a regular who heard it from the crew.

There's no doubt that the train departed minus one First Class vehicle, in other words the sleepers were C-D-E-F-G, B missing.

It appears that 'B' arrived on Saturday morning with a fault, whether or not this was connected with the massive late running I don't know. Then there seemed to be no capacity to address this problem until Sunday afternoon by which time they were running out of time. The coach was removed from the formation at the last minute, hence the late arrival in the platform. So no broken rail and no problem with 'overhead wires', but it doesn't explain why CS were lining up a road alternative, and it should mean that a broken First Class mk3 sleeper coach has been sat at Inverness all day today? That's as much as I know, others may be able to tell us more.

Changing the subject to something more long lasting, and maybe I've missed an earlier post on this, apologies if so.

From tonight they're doing away with First and Standard sleeper coaches, at least on the Inverness section of the Highlander. It's going over to six composites which are approximately 2/3 First and 1/3 Standard - I've looked online and the plans are there. Apparently this is closer to the layout of the new trains. No locked out compartments however, so perhaps this was an urban myth.

Composites coaches were visible online when I booked a trip last week for my trip on the lowlander last night. Had to get off at Motherwell for VTEC onwards to Waverley due to stock issue. Roll on (sorry about the pun) the mark 5’s!

I'm booked on the northbound Highlander on Wednesday night and the berth allocated was in a "composite" coach.

Does the 67 now do the shunting at Inverness? Or is there still an 08 on the go? I was wondering to what extent Serco rely on other companies to get the carriages moved around. The conversation I overheard suggested that they were sitting around waiting for a problem to be fixed which they couldn't deal with themselves. The kind of thing that might not happen were the sleeper operation not a separate franchise.

Nothing leaving Euston at the moment. Failed freight train in the Cheddington area with quite a queue of trains behind it. Doesn't help with the fast lines being closed either

The class 08 draws out the stock in the morning and takes into the opposite platform or the carriage servicing depot, not sure if the stock goes there now but was standard in scotrail days.
After the 67 is released it goes and stables outside the carriage maintenance depot or alongside it.
Then in the evening the 67 draws the stock out and propells it into the station

F/liner 66550 on 4M92 the offending party by the looks of it. A Thunderbird has just crossed over at Ledburn Jnc and now on the Down Slow (bang road) heading towards it, so hopefully will get shifted relatively soon.

I noticed on sunday night that the stock came in on a path showing on RTT from the "motorail siding"... the motorail siding as I used to know it (and would once upon a time watch the motorail wagons being shunted from here onto the front of the sleeper!) was alongside platform 1 but I don't think that exists any more?

Its still used as a siding where the sleeper stock stables during the day as platform 1 is used by scotrail services during the day.
Then the sleeper stock is drawn from there into platform 1 or 2 at night.

Nope...! 4M92 is on the move now courtesy of the Thunderbird however there's a big queue behind it and 1S26 still hasn't left Euston 60+ mins after it was supposed to.
Sleepers not gone to plan last few days was hoping for 92043 on the southbound highlander last night for my second 92 for haulage and ended up with 92010 the only one ive had previously must keep the planners on there toes haha.

I believe you're correct to a large extent - in this photo from 1978 (not mine funnily enough!) the two motorail sidings on the left (with the motorail flats and vans in) have largely gone, as has the goods yard that the 37 is in: https://flic.kr/p/Efyztq

However, the nearest motorail siding (the one with the flats in) is still in existence up to about the point where the 1978 photo starts - but beyond that it's the short stay car park.

If you go on Google Streetview and "walk" about on Falcon Square it's quite interesting as at some points you see a Scotrail 170 in that nearest platform/line (P1) and the Sleeper is over in the main station (with 67007 on the front funnily enough) but then at other points as you get closer to the fence the Scotrail DMU has disappeared and the Sleeper stock is then on that line. There's one particular point as you "walk" around where you can see the 08 on the back of the stock (in the main station) ready to shunt it.

It appears in these Google Streetview images the stock has been put stabled in P1, but from what @Far north 37 is saying they can also put the stock in what remains of the Motorail Siding if P1 is being used during the day.

Approx 3:00-4:00 in this video has some good footage of the current layout as the sleeper leaves Inverness and the camera pans round to show what remains of the motorail siding adjacent to P1...

Always some challenge or other.

1S26 departed 66 Late in the end and with the 'traffic' in front and Fasts out of London closed tonight it's not made any inroads into the delay so far.

Ah that explains the late start for S26 - initially on seeing the late start on RTT I assumed the worst with 92044 at the helm.

View attachment 41320 View attachment 41321 92018 on the blocks at Euston this morning on the highlander. 92032 on the blocks on the road between p15/16.
Not sure if it's just me but I can't see the attachments :(

Interesting that 92032 was still there as plan was to move it back to Willesden after 1S26 left last night, but I'm assuming with the delayed departure to 1S26 and other congestion in/out of Euston caused by the failed freightliner at Cheddington then it was left in the station overnight instead.

Definitely ACLG loco with load 7. 92 + load 7 is too long for the Queen St platforms, as is 86/87 with load 8.

Diesel hauled ECS via City Union:
5M11: http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/G60134/2018/04/01/advanced

5S26: http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/G60146/2018/04/02/advanced

I can never find platform lengths anywhere... is P7 long enough for the diesel to go into the blocks with loco+7 meaning there's nothing as interesting as an ACLG loco propelling (or holding back?!?) stock down the incline from Eastfield?

I think P7 may be the longest at Queen St, only possible rival being P2. P7 usually takes 6-Car 170s with some room to spare, so 86/87 + 7 + Diesel should be fine, if a bit tight.

The thought of an 86 in Queen St very odd.

P7 is 192m and 86+5xMk3+2xMk2+47 = 191.53m.

A 73 on the ECS would make it less of a squeeze (188.51m).
