Caledonian Sleeper Delay Repay

Hi All,

Recently (11/09/26-12/09/26) I have been travelling on the 21:15 Caledonian Sleeper service from EUS (London Euston) to INV (Inverness) which has had multiple delays along route resulting in a delay of over 2 hours. I am aware I will be able to claim back the cost of the full Caledonian Sleeper fare, but I was intending to take the 09:42 INV - EDB (Edinburgh) service (on an Anytime split ticket via Pitlochry, PIT) to then connect onto the 14:08 TPE to Morpeth (MPT) on an Advance ticket. I am just querying to see what my chances are of delay repay for the full journey and any further advice that I could use.

Yes, you can claim delay repay against your full journey based on the delayed arrival time at your final destination. I assume you held all the tickets before you stated your journey.

I think in those circumstances Caledonian Sleepers might well ask why you didn't mitigate the delay by leaving their train at Aviemore (or earlier).

I agree. I think it would be best to stick to just claiming Delay Repay for the Caledonian Sleeper ticket to Inverness.

It would be a different story if the delay had been unavoidable, e.g. if connecting to Nairn or the Far North line.

It's slightly more complex than "you should have got off earlier at X", as its a sleeper service!

Where were you at alarm clock time - say 30 minutes before scheduled time in Inverness? Could you have made any changes at that point?

If not, then its ethically acceptable to delay repay the complete itinerary, in my opinion.

This was my thought too, although you may have been asleep at the time.

I have wondered about similar examples when planning journeys via a rover that involve going to a destination for a short time and then back in the other direction. My reason for this is I play a GPS game Turf and once I have collected a zone (takes around a minute) I'm headed for the next one. If I were headed for the Inverness zone I would have wanted to get there asleep or not - and in your situation I would have been further delayed. I guess I'm thinking about where does the journey end? I'd be interested in the outcome if you do make a claim, but I suspect they might struggle with this one.

I think it depends on the information provided at the time by direct customer service means, SMS or email first and foremost, as CS have these for all travellers, and also the screens etc and members of staff to whom you spoke.

If you knew an accurate (though not necessarily precise) delay time at Inverness in reasonable time to be ready to leave the train at Aviemore, all things considered, it's hard to understand a reasonable person not doing so.

If nothing was provided and if you hadn't reasonably woken up by the time you were leaving Aviemore then it would be different. I don't know what your particular circumstances were.

In my experience of CS delays en route whilst in the seated coach, they do indeed text you with updates. I've even had a direct phone call whilst waiting at Crewe for a cancelled service once.

Arrival at Aviemore was around 13 hours after scheduled departure from Euston. I doubt anyone was still asleep at that time.
