I have used services between Leeds-Todmorden a fair bit recently, and have observed what stock is used on certain services.

These are my findings;

142/144's used on stoppers via Dewsbury
150's used on semi-fasts via Halifax
158's used on stoppers via Halifax

Now, I understand the first one, despite my loathing of said stock, but I don't get why 150's are used on semi-fasts, when 158's are used on stoppers. To me this should be the other way around.

I do not have access to FNW Diagrams, but may be part of a larger picture which depends on what they work the rest of the day.

155s run on the Caldervale aswell.

Perhaps 158s are used for stoppers because of their superior braking and acceleration.

Saying that I recently learned the route from Victoria to Hebden Bridge and back and when I was front ending the type of stock and whether it stopped or not was random.

The majority of interworking is (all via Bradford)

Leeds - Manchester Vic semi fast
Manchester Vic - Selby semi fast
Selby to Huddersfield
Huddersfield - Leeds
Leeds - Man Vic Stopper
Man Vic - Leeds Stopper

Then it all starts again, obviously units will start at different parts of thid interworking but you often find the 158s (including a 3 car) on an early stopping service IIRC.

The "via Dewsburys" interwork at Leeds most of the time so it goes Leeds - Man Vic - Leeds - Huddersfield - Leeds

When I used the Calder Vale line a couple of weeks back at off-peak times it seemed to be 155s and 2 car 158s on the express services (the ones that don't call at stations between Rochdale and Todmorden) and a mix of 142s, 3 car 144s and 150s on the other services.

It is partly to do with ensuring the higher capacity stock is in the right places for the peak periods, so whilst the 1637 Leeds - Manchester stopper is allocated to a 3 car 158 the 1448 Manchester - Selby semi fast is allocated a 150. It also means all Calder Valley services out of Leeds (excluding the Brighouse/Huddersfield service) from 1607-1807 are allocated a minimum of 3 car sprinter stock
