Calculating London Overground Delay Repay

TfL have refunded me £2.70 for a journey I made on Friday afternoon between Tottenham Court Road and Forest Hill using the Elizabeth Line and London Overground via Whitechapel when services were disrupted due to a lorry hitting a bridge at Hoxton.

However I'm not sure how it was calculated.

I touched in at TCR at 1405 and planned to get the 1424 at Whitechapel to Crystal Palace. By 1425 I was told to use an alternative route and went back on the Elizabeth Line to Liverpool Street, walked to Moorgate Northern Line and then changed to NR at London Bridge (topping up my Oyster to ensure I didn't go into a minus balance) boarding the 1458 Southern to London Victoria which meant the final fare was £5 rather than £3 if I used the normal route touching out at Forest Hill at 1516.

Does this only cover a percentage of the £3 fare or the £5 fare.

This is the Delay Repay claim.

If there's another reason I should try and claim back for paying the higher premium fare for changing modes because of the delay, I'd be interested to hear if I should ring up the Oyster helpline tomorrow and try and claim the £2 back?

It's a little difficult to follow what exactly happened, but I don't think you were due any delay compensation at all, as:

1. TfL and its subsidiaries don't compensate for delays outside their control, which would encompass a bridge strike; and
2. On Overground their threshold for compensation is 30 minutes (or 60 minutes if your journey includes a connection on National Rail "outside the zones"), and it seems to me you were delayed by less than this, as the 1424 from Whitechapel to Crystal Palace should have got you there for 1454 and you say you touched out at your destination at 1516, 22 minutes late).

As such, unless I have misunderstood the sequence of events, which is quite possible, I think you should accept the £2.70 and move on.

It looks as though you've done rather well there - whichever fare is being used for the DR calculation you've got more than 50% back and that's a lot for under an hour of delay.
