Is it possible to rock up on the day and go by ferry?
Only issue for me is transport either at either end to connect with ferry.

Yes, if there is foot passenger quota available but that's only on about 6 ferries a day and note it's quota not the capacity of the ferry. Also note the fare can be around £30 each way. There's also a 90 min check in so it's not really practical for a day trip.
In Dover a taxi from the station to the terminal is about £7. In Calais there's a 20 min interval bus service from across the road from the terminal to the town.

Someone has made an FOI request and obtained the sales figures for this ticket (less than 1 a day in recent years) and correspondence between Southeastern and P&O about bringing back the tickets.
It also reveals how much P&O got per ticket.

Interestingly P&O's account for handling these tickets was still in the name of British Rail!

How things have changed. Back in the mid 2000s at university, we would frequently hop across to Calais on various promotions for a few quid at most.Also note the fare can be around £30 each way.

Now we have left the EU, ( I am a regretful vote leaver ) The customs duty limits now seem to make it not worth it

4 litres of duty-free spirits (saving £11.50 per litre) is enough to carry on the train!

I used to go to EU for fags aprox 1/2 price 800 allowed, good saving after paying for coach fare, now import limits 200 not worth it
as to spirits I found in France and Belgium the price was almost the same as UK
where can you get them at £11.50 saving?. beer very cheap but too bulky unless you go by car
