Ohh. In that case you make it sound like I was boasting when I totally wasn’t!! :( Plus I never said I fly in First Class! I fly with Virgin normally and they only have Upper Class and Premium Economy!

Next you'll be saying you have a PC/laptop/phone each in the family! :p

Erm...isn’t that pretty much standard for the 21st century?

My sarcasm radar is not very good so maybe I shouldnt have responded to that.

Anyway. Please can we move on. I don’t want to go any further off topic.

Christ on a bike. I like flying ( not the take off and landing quite so much) but these people must be pushing the odds of something bad happening.

In my lifetime I've done about 150 flights and on only one of those did anything "interesting" happen, and that was just a go-around, which was quite exciting (full power, pull up and hard right). And that was only because of the aircraft on the runway being slow to vacate, it wasn't close or anything like it.

FWIW take-off is the best bit for me! :)

On the other point...it was Wales for us most holidays! We did south west France by car every few years though.

We went to Spain on a double deck coach once or twice. Very cheap and cheerful.

( it was one of those coaches with an area on the ground floor at the very rear. We thought that was the VIP lounge! )

Don’t get me started on Caribbean buses - I was saying my prayers on the ones in Barbados!

Going back on topic - I’ve been called “babe” by a number of air stewards both male and female, but nothing more than that from the males regarding camp actually towards, although one time on Virgin I noticed they are quite Camp sounding mid flight, then I overheard them after landing in St Lucia chatting among themselves, and the camp ones were speaking perfectly normally! I hope they don’t put it on, I don’t find it humourous, nor interesting. It’s downright irritating to hear “Dom Perignon, babes?” from them in a completely over exaggerated and perhaps fake Essex-y accent, and believe me they’re always parroting on about that although I have no clue what that is. I’m guessing alcohol as I never get offered it!

Well - if the male cabin crew want to put on fake camp voices let them as long as they don’t bother me. The female cabin crew on the other hand, well - they can come near me as much as they want to though ;)
A very interesting blend of creepy and first world problem-y. Many of the destinations you fly to have major socio-economic problems, not to mention those at home as well who could never dream of this. If your biggest problem is a slightly effeminate cabin crew member in J class you've got life sown up.

So you and your brother sit on separate machines/devices looking at the same site in the same room!

Anyway, keeping the subject on topic, my view is that, due to the nature of the shift work and need to be away from home a lot, it isn't particularly suited to those with a family/children. Hence why, as mentioned by others, it attracts people without these commitments.

Talking of weird cranks, there's a particularly weird one here that I like watching...

They’re brilliant, aren't they!

Not always. Quite a few times he used either my phone or the iPad last year because he smashed his phone.

Has anyone noticed this with BA? I haven’t noticed it with them, although as TheAdelante said it does seem quite apparent on Virgin.

In my lifetime I've done about 150 flights and on only one of those did anything "interesting" happen, and that was just a go-around.

I have flown 46 times and had 20 different types of aircraft.

The only out of course incident for me has been an emergency landing, on board G-FLII on 1st April 1999. The reason for the emergency landing was the other passenger threw up all over Caroline Feraday's portable radio transmitter which was on the floor in the middle of the cabin...:oops:

Long haul holidays can be cheaper than you think, especially going to South East Asia. Yes you might spend more on the flight (although the Middle Eastern carriers can be good value), but when you're there you spend much, much less on food, hotels, entertainment etc. On honeymoon in Malaysia, seldom spent more than £2 equivalent on dinner...

Agreed re South East Asia. Thailand is (or was) brilliant value. I noticed a big change between my first visit in 2008 and my return in 2013, when it had become noticeably more expensive and touristy.

Apparently Vietnam is the new Thailand, although I have yet to visit.

Yep.

On the Flying Eye they used a portable set for the transmissions to Capital; it was roughly the size of a tote bag and it was placed on the floor centrally between the two rows of seats.

And as if it wasn't bad enough putting the transmitter out of action like that anyway, that date just happened to be Maundy Thursday and it was at the start of the evening rush hour... the busiest time of the year on the roads, and the one time they really, really, needed the Eye in the air... not returning to base after just 45 minutes because the cabin had been redecorated!

Capital did allow me a second trip so that I could get the full duration, but it was on condition that I took a different person with me - I wonder why... I got my second trip on 31st August 2001, the full 2h21 duration.

That's a great anecdote. I believe the eye used to fly from Elstree aerodrome? Not sure when it was retired.

In my 38th year of flying for work. There is a site on flightradar24.com where you can log your flights. All your flights are put onto a world map too. Presently catching up with my flights from the 90's, by using the visa stamps in my old passports. My missing flights are due to the Arabic script visa's and stamps I have difficulty in reading. I've been able to log 227 flights, 350,000 miles plus, and last year I did 39 flights through 9 countries.

I've found that all air crew are very professional, and give you better attention when you say please and thank you. As to their gender and sexuality, I don't care so long as they top up my glass, give me plenty of water, and as I get older, a couple of extra pillows for my back to help me sleep on those dreadful and interminable overnight flights I have to do.

For a while, I was put onto Air France with my work colleagues, and we stopped on route in Cairo. We stayed on board the aircraft during crew change and refuelling. We tried to sit at the emergency exits for leg room. The aircraft had a strange set up with an air-crew seat next to a single passenger seat but facing the opposite direction. During re-fueling a crew member would sit in the crew seat. One of my work pals got used to this and made sure he could chat up the stewardess and get a few extra (5 or 6 )miniature bottles of booze which he put into his spare socks in his carry on holdall. He had cottoned onto the fact that at our destination the customs didn't like rummaging through passengers clothes as they considered it dirty.

One time he had a shock as the crew wasn't a female, but, lets say, a fay male. My colleague was running about after take off asking the rest of us for spare pairs of socks and underwear, as the steward had passed onto him 15 miniature bottles. I'd love to have known what was said during the time we were re-fueling.

I’m sure I saw a male flight attendant blow a mock kiss at me on a flight to Fuerteventura! It freaked me out to say the least...
Ooh it sounds like you had an admirer! Although it can make you uncomfortable if you are straight, I am sure he meant no harm. He wouldn't have bene allowed to make any advances anyway as he was working.

Personally I think it is great if they find you attractive then it is your lucky day, as they will most likely provide you with better service! Last time I got a free drink.

If you are straight, there is not much chance of the same happening with a woman air hostess. If anything they will take less interest in you as are probably tired of men drooling over them and groping them.

Probably not. I am sure he would feel better if he got a free drink too though. Comparing apples to apples, sexuality shouldn't and doesn't matter so long as they do their job. Blowing kisses could be argued to be inappropriate although I am sure this boy would have felt quite the opposite if it was a sexy girl

Dude, I’m fifteen... I should certainly hope he’d make no advances!

I don’t really want middle aged men to find me attractive thanks... Erm... I did get a free drink actually...

Anyway what do you mean, last time?!

This boy might agree with you there... but moving on, male staff blowing kisses at customers isn’t it exactly what you’d expect is it?

that’s the sort of thing you’d expect from female cabin crew anyway isn’t it?
My sister is cabin crew. Don't expect that from her. Please don't say anything like that again. I come from from a proud family, she may just be cabin crew to you but she has performed on TV and is a qualified dance teacher, I am an engineering graduate, my two brothers are graduates in education.

This boy might agree with you there... but even so, that’s the sort of thing you’d expect from female cabin crew anyway isn’t it? Not from the males... Or is that me being unintentionally generalistic there... if so I apologise. I just wonder why the male cabin crew always seem to flirt with other males on flights...
Oooh that is extremely sexist! Yes you are generalising. No it is definitely not to be expected from the females. Back in the old days sexual harassment wasn't a word that existed but today that is a very sexist view. The girls are proud of their jobs and are there to do their jobs well and nothing more. They hate being looked at as pieces of meet and being reduced to expected in-flight eye candy. Never expect one of the girls to blow you a kiss or anything more - that would be boarding on escort services!

The males do tend to flirt more with passengers than they used to as being gay is more accepted in society these days. If you wonder why the male cabin crew flirt with other males, the reason is they either are just being friendly or their over attentiveness is being misunderstood as providing good customer service. Straight men are not usually as out going so gay men or whose who are camp and be a little bearing to some but it is really nothing to worry about. There is little you can do about middle aged men fancying you. Likewise you can't make a girl fancy you. But as go on more flights you will get used to it I am sure. If you got a free drink too then feel special lol.

Honestly, the male stewards are just being friendly most of the time. Last time I had a nice chat with the man doing the drink service about my journey and holiday. He gave me a free drink when his colleague wasn't around and called me "darling". Whether he felt sorry for me or found me attractive I don't care - free drink is a free drink! The breakfast was terrible so I got a free replacement meal too. :D

(wince) You said that all wrong... people are going to misunderstand what you are saying and take it differently :s by the looks of things they already have. :|

Oh god, please don’t think I was trying to insult the role of cabin crew! No way, I would never look down on anyone! I strongly appreciate the work cabin crew do and see no reason to look down on them at all!

When I said what you’d expect from female cabin crew I worded that really idiotically I must admit.

What I meant to say although I don’t know if this is much better  is that you wouldn’t normally expect a male to blow kisses at teenage boys but I’ve seen ladies do that quite a few times before. Just ignore me...I don’t know what I’m saying - oh god I feel so guilty now, but just know I’m a humble person what ever you think and I would never look down on such helpful people... :(
