The Roslagsbanan (Roslagen Railway) is the last fully operational narrow gauge (891mm) line in Sweden (although there are several narrow gauge steam railways). It lies in Stockholm's northeastern suburbs, but it also reaches far out in the countryside. The Roslagen network consists of three lines with a total distance of 65 kilometers. The network have however been much larger in the past. There are discussions about re-opening the line to Rimbo and Norrtälje (which BTW is one of Sweden's largest cities without any rail connection).

The whole network was in danger of being closed in the 80s after years of poor maintance. Thankfully, new EMUs were built and the line was heavily upgraded in the 90s. Several sections are still being expanded to double track. However, when the EMUs were built in the late 80s, the future of the line was still not decided. Therefore, they were built as cheap as possible. They are very noisy, and combined with the narrow gauge and still partially
poor track, they are sometimes known as doing "the fastest 50mph in the world".

Here is most of the longest out of the tree lines, from Stockholm to Lindholmen. This, and another 4 miles further north to Kårsta, is what remains of the old Stockholm - Norrtälje main line. Let us hope that it gets rebuilt soon! Sorry for the dirty windshield, we had some problems with the vipers. Enjoy and feel free to post a comment! :D
