Yesterday CPKC and CN trains in Cananda came to a halt, when a deadline for an agreement with unions passed. Both companies issued lock-out notices to workers. Services were already reduced over the last few days in anticipation of a possible shutdown. Shipments of perishable goods and hazardous chemicals were not accepted any more to avoid them being stuck on stalled trains.
Later in the day the Canadian federal government intervened and forced the involved parties in a binding arbitration and ordered services to resume (https://www.ctvnews.ca/politics/rai...nding-arbitration-in-labour-dispute-1.7010508). Business groups had called for days for the Government to intervene. CN has revoked the lock-out notices and is working on a recovery plan. According to a CPKC statement linked in the CTV News article the teamsters union is considering an appeal against the Governments decision.
Shutdown affect some commuter lines in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal that use CPKC tracks. The CN dispatchers are not part of the labour dispute and continued to work. Apart from the Sudbury-White River which are suspended, Via Rail is not affected by this dispute.
