c2c Train Wi-Fi

Whilst not being trumpeted massively yet, today saw the long awaited Wi-Fi go-live on c2c, following significant work to the Class 357 fleet. As with the station wi-fi, the train wi-fi will be completely free to use.

It is accompanied by c2c's version of the Virgin BEAM product for on-board entertainment which has been named c2c Vista.

Given that Virgin BEAM and c2c Vista are products of the same provider it will be little surprise that the content offering and the look-and-feel is exceptionally similar.

But I do think this represents a first for a suburban / commuter operator rather than a long-distance / intercity operator.

I wonder whether TPE's similar service will also be that whitelabeled product?

I tried the onboard wifi on my commute this morning and it wouldn't work. Neither iPhone nor iPad would connect. Had a quick look on Twitter and I'm not the only one. For the record I also asked the person sitting next to me to give it a try.

Will see if it works on my train home, although that's one of the 387 services.

Lots of complaints on twitter today about the service not working, and also on the 387s, they wont have wifi possibly for ever as they dont have equipment for it, unless they agree to have it fitted. The 357s have had the wifi things for around 1year now but natex never had enough money to implement it.

The 387s do have some wifi kit as they currently broadcast a network called icomera wifi. Doesn't let you connect though.

According to c2c twitter the 387s should be enabled by end of April.

The wifi currently on the 387s i think is for the drivers and their iPads. They have no beacons in the passenger areas so they will need to be fitted.

Chiltern Railways advertise that their 165 units which run on commuter lines are now Wi-Fi enabled. I have not tried it but other members of this forum may have experience. Given that even radio reception in parts of the Chilterns is patchy I would be interested to know how good the Wi-Fi is.

Will have to try this out the next time im out, probably on monday.

Shame they've not done much to help out on overcrowding tho, that would place them better in my books.

Can only wait as what they're doing in the may timetable. Some is on RTT including switches with the 387s and removing various Barking, Laindon and Basildon stops.
