c2c Timetable during engineering work

Just fallen victim to some more timetabling quirks from c2c. Sat at Limehouse waiting for the 00:19 to Grays and lo and behold another train passes through to Grays without stopping at 00:06. What could possibly explain not running the last trains of the day as all stations services? Additionally - this has been another weekend of only 2 useful tph via Grays as the Upminster shuttles are timed so closely to the direct London trains that there’s no point using them. Just wondering why frequencies are so low on a well used route. And why the 4 tph off peak can’t be spaced out in a way that’s more useful and closer to a turn up and go service?

Interesting. I was under the impression all c2c trains called at all stations (certainly Between Fenchurch St and Upminster) except some trains during the peak hours. I note there are also some trains that miss West Ham, Barking and Upminster. It seems the only place you can really reliably catch every service and not fall foul to this odd quirk is Fenchurch Street itself? And then again some services start from Liv St on weekends.

Monday - Friday only a small number of morning peak trains skip West Ham/Limehouse. Pre-covid with the full timetable that was running there were a considerable number more skips for West Ham for capacity reasons and to speed up services

As far as I can see this one for last night has no logical explanation (although i’m sure there will be some reasoning somewhere). They only usually skip Limehouse on weekends if the Liverpool St services are diverted to Fenchurch St or if 12 cars are running around. 12s have to be dispatched from Limehouse

There was a 00:05 to Leigh-on-Sea right up the back of that service so it'll have needed to skip Limehouse to maintain a compliant headway I'd imagine.

As for why it was planned like that rather than the Leigh service leaving later - I suppose only Network Rail and the TOC will know. Possibly related to constraints with traincrew diagram timings seeing as the Leigh service then runs as an unadvertised express back to Laindon to stable, seeing as Shoeburyness was unavailable.

Yes there was 2 pairs of 357’s stabled at Leigh on Sea & Laindon middle platforms over the weekend due to engineering works between Leigh & Shoebury. Usually would be kept at Shoeburyness depot.

Most of the fleet were all blocked at Shoeburyness during the works, so had to use available stock from East Ham.

Thanks for the information all!

Ah I see, so that’s why the Ockendon services become shuttles when there are engineering works past Leigh? As there isn’t enough available stock from East Ham?
