Hi,

I have spent yesterday evening and today revising for my computing exams and I have made a little calculator on Visual Basic as part of my revision on the topic of algorithms. This calculator will probably be useful for BVE route developers out there.

It allows you to

- Convert Mile to KM
- Convert 1 in X gradient to pitches
- Calculate diverging curves (which is a pain to do by hand... but not anymore )
- Calculate distances (between stations etc...)

Heres a screenshot of the thing. Its nearly ready and just needs a bit of tweaking.

If there are anything else that I should add to this tool, please do let me know.

I know what would be really handy.....something to calculate the amount of cant required on curves. IIRC, a suitable formula is published (relating cant to the curve radius and line speed) somewhere in the online RGS it should be quite straightforward. Not something I have ever done myself though - bit of an omission really.

That's certainly along the right lines although the calculation there is for cant deficiency rather than cant; section 2.5.5 of this has the necessary calculation.

Not sure how the second curve parameter actually realates to mm of cant though.

GC/RT5021 is the standard - just go onto RGS online and type in the four digit number.
