I bought some advance train tickets over the internet at the weekend.

I am aware that the tickets are not refundable - but know that there is a cooling off period for goods bought over the internet.

does a similar cooling off period apply to things such as tickets for events, travel etc?

If so, could I be pointed in the correct direction?

Unfortunately, the distance selling regulations specifically exclude travel tickets. See http://www.oft.gov.uk/shared_oft/business_leaflets/general/oft698.pdf - specifically the second part of section 2.20.

If your ticket is an advance, you may be able to change it (but not get a refund) for a fee (£10 normally). If it's a walk-up ticket you can get a refund for a fee (again, £10).

I agree with SickyNicky but will add that if these are bought from one of the TOCs websites using an account you have set up, then you may be able to log back in and to amend the booking (if the tickets haven't been collected or posted out to you).
The £10 admin fee will still apply, and will not let you make significant changes to an Advance, but it may be simpler for you than taking the tickets to a Station for exchange.
