Buying ticket on train...

I’ve got a season ticket from A Cardiff valleys station to Newport.

I’m going to Bristol today.

Can I just get a ticket from Newport to briston on the train or do I have to buy in advance from the ticket office in Cardiff or break my journey at Newport?

You could buy it from any booking office or try to buy one from the on- train staff before you get to the end of your season ticket route. If you still don't have a ticket and the connection is very tight you could ask the guard if you could buy a ticket before you board

The only way you can be sure you will not have to delay your journey or be in legal trouble is to buy a ticket before you board the train at Cardiff, e.g. at the ticket office/machines at Cardiff (or your Valley Lines origin station, if it has ticketing facilities), or using a mobile app.

If you are running late you can of course travel to Newport but before you continue onwards from there you must previously have obtained a ticket. It may be worth seeking out the guard onboard the train, as they will usually (though not always) sell you a ticket for a part of the journey you've not started yet. If the worst comes to the worst you'll simply have to get off at Newport and get the extension ticket there. Alternatively you could buy a ticket on a mobile app (not that I am usually in favour of this) between Cardiff and Newport, and make sure to activate it before the scheduled departure at Newport!

Thanks Guys - I looked at the mobile app but whereas for TfW you can get tickets downloaded to your phone I can't see that GWR do this..

Yes, but only for pick up at station - I can't get an e-ticket delivered to my phone.

Have you tried any Trainline-based apps (not The Trainline itself, as that charges silly fees, but the likes of Virgin Trains, CrossCountry, East Midlands Trains etc.)? I seem to be able to get an e-ticket on any train from Newport to Bristol Temple Meads, in fact it is the only fulfilment method offered.

For anyone that doesn't know, the Trainline app doesn't charge a fee on a ticket for outward travel 'today'. Like many other apps (but not all, I think) it does e- and m-tickets where available.

True, but I tend not to recommend The Trainline even for same-day travel, because if someone downloads the app, they're more likely to use it for another journey in future that isn't same-day, thus incurring the avoidable fee. Much better to use an almost identical rebranded app.

GWR do have mobile tickets as part of their app. Not sure why you couldn't see the option but Newport to Bristol defo is one of the routes that you can get a mobile ticket for (as I have done so a few months ago, and just double checked now).

Does your local station not have a ticket office or ticket machine?

If it does not have any way for you to buy the ticket you want, just get on the train and make your journey. If there is no way to buy a ticket from either conductor, or at your interchange, buy it at your destination.

Mobile tickets are another option, but I wouldn't choose one personally because of the risks associated e.g. your device runs out of battery.

ah, I can do gwr mobile tickets - just wasn't signed in on the app!
