I have a mate who wishes to buy an annual season ticket in advance to commence on January 1st. She has been using odd period tickets and her current one ends this weekend. She asked at her local (c2c) booking office and was advised they only sell one working day in advance. This is in line with The Manual, but it also says that local instructions apply over Christmas and the new year.

Does anyone know if any of the following TOCs would issue an annual season ticket today or this weekend to start 1st January:
  • Chiltern
  • EMT
  • FGW
  • Greater Anglia
  • London Midland
  • South West Trains
  • Southern
  • Southeastern
  • Virgin Trains

Would it not make sense to start it on 31st December to avoid the price increase?

Price increases from 2nd January, so as long as the ticket starts on or before 1st January you pay the current price.

I bought my first monthly season ticket yesterday at Basingstoke. I asked the SWT clerk if I needed to wait for a certain date to get a ticket valid from 27th December but he said there was no such requirement and happily sold me the ticket.

I tried to get an annual season ticket (EMT) starting on the 31st. I was refused by the woman at the till, saying that the system wouldn't let her. I currently have an existing season ticket that doesn't run out until next week. Not sure if it's just she doesn't know how or it is actually not allowed. I'm sure that I have bought season tickets before when the other one has still been active.

The ticketing system used by EMT will not allow flexibility when it comes to issuing seasons - for seasons longer than a week (e.g. monthly, annual) you can only purchase them up to seven days in advance of their start date, when it is a renewal of an existing ticket. For new purchases, it is noon of the previous day - or noon on Friday if the start date is a Monday.

That is for renewals without break in validity which doesn't apply here.

SWT will sell a monthly or annual in advance from 17th Dec IIRC - sorry not at work so can't quote exact dates - runs till about 8th Jan I think.

Thanks for the info. She told me I had to buy it on the 31st, which I knew was bunkum. So it made me doubt the rest of what she had to say.

If you're changing from one season to another is that classed as new or renewal? For example if you have a monthly and want to buy an annual?

Normally if there is no break in validity it is considered a renewal. If there is a break, it is new. It doesn't matter what you're changing from or to, AFAIK.

SWT will do monthly or longer season renewals up to two weeks in advance for tickets starting from Mon 17th Dec up to Tues 8th Jan 2013.

To take advantage of the current 2012 prices, season tickets must be purchased to start on or before 1 Jan 2013
