Buying one ticket with a two together railcard.

My girlfriend and I are travelling from Basingstoke to Attleborough, on Tuesday 30th. We'll later travel from Attleborough to Cambridge (probably on 3rd January).

I have a return half of a ticket from Basingstoke to Cambridge and had been intending to buy a return from Cambridge to Attleborough. My girlfriend doesn't have any tickets yet. We hold a two together railcard and will be travelling together.

There are some good value advance tickets still available for Tuesday for BSK - ATL. Can we use the two together railcard discount if we buy one of these tickets for her? We'll be making the journey together and I can't see anything in the railcard terms and conditions that says we both must be travelling on discounted tickets, only that we must travel together. Nevertheless, I suspect I may struggle to buy an individual ticket with a two together railcard.

The interpretation varies.

You won't be able to buy it online AFAIK, so you will have to try it at the station. My money is on you being refused, although I do believe this is a bit of a grey area. Finding someone willing to sell you one ticket tied to a specific train when you have a flexible ticket yourself may be a struggle.

This will be difficult.

I once tried to buy two tickets at a station with a Two Together Railcard; the clerk tried to do them one at a time and the TIS did not apply the discount. Only when she chose two passengers at once did it accomplish anything.

Perhaps it can be done by the clerk adding both tickets to the basket and deleting one, but I think you will be hard-pressed to find a clerk willing and able to do it.

I think this subject has come up before on this forum and I don't think there was agreement, but even if there was you would still have to find a clerk who agrees, can do it and is actually willing to do it. If you choose to accept that mission, I wish you good luck.

On Tribute you cannot sell 1 ticket with a 2TR railcard discount applied

You have to select 2 adult passengers before you can either put it in the basket or go to the MOP screen. If you put it in the basket it appears as one item so cannot delete one of them

Could possibly issue both, then non-issue the second one as they would have different ticket numbers?

Would be a complicated way of doing it though.

You probably could do it like that, you certainly could do it like that as an Out of Shift non issue without much trouble as that doesnt ask for numbers, and pretty much anything can be non issued that way.

I suspect the only trouble would be when accounts check the paperwork.....!
