Buying extensions on the train

Suppose I have a West Byfleet to Byfleet and New Haw ticket. If I want to travel beyond Byfleet and New Haw, say to Waterloo, normally I would have to go to the West Byfleet ticket office to get a ticket from Byfleet and New Haw to Waterloo. But what if the ticket office is closed? Am I allowed to buy the ticket on the train or do I have to get off at Byfleet and New Haw and buy the ticket from the machine there?

when you are on the train, when the ticket inspector comes through ask them to excess your ticket to waterloo, they will then print you off another ticket which has excess written on it, they will instruct you to show all of your tickets on the return leg, you do not have to get off the train at all, you will need to pay a bit extra to do this

Do SWT operate this service? If so their guards (on-board team) are often just non-commercial. So they could not often do the excess.

However most Train Managers (commercial) would sell you it if they could because of the commission.

I'm not sure. I'd suggest asking SWT for their answer, it would be interesting to read what they say.

Excessing is usually cheaper but in many cases splitting tickets is cheaper (as discussed on this forum at great length). Normally you have to buy both tickets before you get on the train for splitting but that isn't possible if the ticket office is closed as the ticket machine does not sell remote tickets (apart from online collection).

So I am just querying how split tickets work when the ticket office is closed under Penalty Fare rules. Do you just buy the first ticket at the ticket machine and buy the second (and subsequent) ones on the trains or the next ticket barrier, or are you obliged to buy a through ticket even if it is dearer than split tickets?

Two or three times a week I catch the same service from Clapham Junction to Weybridge and as a same-carriage-same-seat merchant I get to recognise those who are similar. There's another SCSSM who gets on every morning and occupies the same seat as far as Surbiton. The other morning the guard came round and the chap asked for an extension to, strangely enough, West Byfleet. So, yes, you can buy an extension on SWT (outer suburban, at least) but I also started wondering whether this chap just happened to want to go to West Byfleet that morning (he alighted at Surbiton as usual), or he usually goes there but is normally adequately ticketed, or this is a dodge he regularly performs, banking on ticket checks on the short run from Clapham Junction to Surbiton being a rarity.

I know that on Heathrow Connect, you can buy Travelcard extensions to the airport (which is worth doing if the Piccadilly is inconvenient) but that is a special case. My answer would be that it depends on the guard and the availability of ticket machines at the stations involved. At Sandy, the machines kept on breaking down last year (on a DOO line) and that my sister often had to sort things out at Hitchin. There never seemed to be any problems.

Back to the question - I would think that the NCoC provisions have to apply, meaning that if you can't get the ticket you need before you board the train then you have to be allowed to buy it on train or at your destination.

I know people have posted before about SWT's fierce revenue protection policy, but if they went so far as to disregard the NCoC terms then they would leave themselves open to action.

Because TVMs can not sell tickets from different locations.

Understandable given that they will charge you 4 times the correct fare!! If they gave PRIV discounts, you may have some use for them then, for journeys with other TOCs.
