At the end of the lease Motability will sell the cars on the used market.

They're often surprisingly good buys, too. I've had two myself, one years ago and my current one. You tend to get a 2-3 year old car with a very low mileage (barely broken in) that has been maintained correctly and is generally in good nick. Effectively a new car at a used price. So while I'm not entitled to a Motability lease, and hope I am never disabled enough to get one, I do actually personally benefit from the scheme!

They're often sold via the likes of Cinch if you're after them, though nothing specifically identifies them as such apart from clues like the mileage, often they have done a larger mileage in year one than year two because the person's health has sadly deteriorated, resulting in them no longer being able to drive.

Obviously I'd be less interested in one adapted for wheelchair use, but plenty aren't.

About 20% of all new cars in the UK are leased through Motability. After three years they go into the used car market. They keep both the new and the used car markets humming along nicely.

Motability also borrow from the banks to fund the initial capital cost of the vehicles, and this lending has traditionally been seen by the banks as a very safe investment to hold as part of a portfolio.

So Reeves is going to throw all that in the bin. She's really not very bright, is she?

Not the only thing she is about to ruin. The tax rises coming look like it's going to affect the low to middle earners again.
She's absolutely clueless.

Getting back on topic though, I knew a lady who got a new mobility car every 4 years with the old one going back with less that 4000 miles on it as she hardly used it!

To me, that sounds like the scheme is being abused. The figure is much higher than I would have guessed at. I thought you needed something like the higher rate of DLA or PIP to be eligible for Motability. Is someone at Motability actually checking applicants?

You do, my Wife gets the enhanced mobility allowance, and for the past 14 months has not received it, but instead got a Kia Sportage (book price £43K), she only pays for the fuel. The servicing, Insurance, Road Tax, RAC etc is all covered. Two other named drivers are also covered as long as she is in the car or you are driving on her behalf, e.g. going to the Pharmacy etc.
Just as well, it's had 5 punctures already, and when they replace the damaged tyre they change the other one on the same axle as well.
The last one had only been on 3 weeks, so best part of brand new.
So far it's done just over 15k miles in 14 months, and is probably the most uncomfortable car i've ever had the misfortune to been in. f the road is not level as a Billiard Table it 'porpoises'.

It illustrates that new car sales have dropped off a cliff, not that people are abusing the system. Yes, you do need the highest rate of the mobility component of PIP or DLA and, yes, Motability check: the payment is sent directly by the DWP to Motability.

I purchased an ex-Motability Mazda from a main dealer garage in 2013 and I've still got it, although it's now in use as a second car to a newer model.

It was just over 3 years old when I bought it, with approx 11k miles on the clock and 3 main dealer services completed.

Most reliable car I've ever had. Also by far the longest owned.
