Buying a ticket for someone else?

Hi,
I have a visitor to the UK coming to visit on Friday this week. They land in to Birmingham Airport about 2:30pm and will need to go to Derby.
Cost isn't really an issue and it seems as if the simplest ticket is an Off Peak Day Return at £21.40.

How can I buy the ticket in advance for them?
Can I buy an e-ticket and simply e-mail the details to them?

An e-ticket with the PDF e-mailed to the person is probably the most straightforward way.

Yes, just buy an e-ticket and email them the PDF. but beware that a few booking sites still can't give you a ticket as a PDF. I usually use TransPennine Express who definitely do, but there are other options.

Alternatively the ticket office at Birmingham International station should be able to sell them this ticket when they arrive.

If they do buy the ticket themselves, one possibility is to write down the exact details of the ticket that they want. If there is any confusion, they can show the e-mail (or, even better, a piece of paper with the details carefully copied down) to the booking clerk.

There are only VIA BIRMINGHAM tickets issued. It's a moot point whether if an ANY PERMITTED fare existed it would be valid via Coventry. Any 'normal' (ie not enthusiast) wouldn't be interested in changing three times to get to Derby from Birmingham International, when you can just change once at New St.
