For my London trip in September my friend and I will need 2 zone 1 - 6 travel cards. how do i book them in advance, can I book them through say East coast web site and if so what do I order?. I would like to pick them up at Runcorn station, which is our departure station. We both have senior railcards. Many thanks in advance.

Put in something like Finsbury Park (or any other station in the zones) as the origin and "London Zones 1-6" as the destination, and add the railcards. One of the options will be the discounted off-peak day travelcard.

There is no advantage to doing so (and a potential disadvantage of having to obtain refunds if you choose not to travel), but enter the destination as London Zones 1-6 or simply 0035.

Just buy on the day from the guard. They'll be grateful for the commission!

Any station, including Runcorn can sell you a Off Peak Day Travelcard.

Sadly, the vast majority of Avantix issued Travelcards fail to work the ticket barriers...(Or we might just have a dodgy batch of printers round our way)...so you end up having to exchange them at a Ticket Office (which has to be run by the same TOC) or asking to be let through the manual gate all the time.

Cheers,

Barry

You should be able to buy a day travelcard at *ALL* stations - to not do so is in breach of impartial retailing an' all that...

Just note that if for example your trip suddenly gets cancelled you will have two travelcards with no use, and no value. You can buy it on the train or at Kings Cross (or equiv) when you arrive into London :)

I always purchase mine in advance from my local station, Cheltenham Spa.
The cost, with your senior railcard is £5.30.

The answers so far refer to one day travelcards.

Are 7 day ones available in the same sort of way? Or do they become 'season' tickets and need a photocard? Or just can't be sold?

For in-boundary period travelcards it's probably more convenient overall to buy when you get to London so you can get the TC on Oyster.

The rule is: Season Tickets and Travelcard Seasons must be accompanied by an approved Photocard, except for any 7 Day adult 'In boundary' Travelcard or for any Period/Annual Travelcard issued on Oyster.

I think that means that a Photocard is not required for a 7 Day adult 'In boundary' Travelcard issued on paper.

What are the restrictions for a Z1-6 off-peak travelcard these days? I haven't bought one in ages.

I assume the travel off-peak restrictions still only apply to NR travel in and out of London (where applicable). The exact product I will be using is a Hemel Hempstead - Z1-6 , or the cheapest alternative.

An inboundary ODT is valid after 0930 Mon -> Fri and at all times weekends/bank hols

Except that this isn't an inboundary travelcard. From Avantix:
Restriction : LW
Mondays to Fridays only.

Outward Travel
By any trains scheduled to
arrive at London Terminals or
Kensington Olympia at or after
1000.
Also not valid on any train
departing London Terminals
between 1645 and 1845
inclusive.

Return Travel
Not valid on any train
departing London Terminals
between 1645 and 1845
inclusive.

Within the zones it is valid anytime after 0930 until 0430 the next day.

Smashing thank you. I've come to the conclusion this is a cheaper option rather than a HML - EUS CDR + Oyster for the day as I'll be moving around during 'oyster' peak in the evening, and thus the cap will be higher.

It should certainly be cheaper than a CDR + All zones travelcard, but not because of peak oyster fares between 1600 and 1900. Although the single fares are expensive, the daily cap is the off-peak one. You only activate the anytime cap if you travel enough before 9.30. Plus remember that the off-peak cap for zones 1 and 2 is only £6.60 while zones 1-4 is £7.30.

Bloomin eck this is confusing! I'll probably go as far as Croydon on LO, so that's a full whack TC for me. Although I have a railcard discounted Oyster.

One day off-peak railcard discounted TC HML - Z1256 is £11.20

HML - EUS CDR with railcard is £10.10

Guess which one I'm doing then!

Side note - crikey that CDR has gone up a lot recently. It used to be £7.20 or £7.90 I think, that was around Christmas time!

I think you're confusing it with the Off-Peak Return (SVR), valid one month.

Hemel Hempstead - London Terminals Anytime Day Return (SDR) is £16.80 (Railcard £11.10).
Hemel Hempstead - London Terminals Off-Peak Return (SVR) is £15.30 (Railcard £10.10). It takes Restriction LW.
Hemel Hempstead - London Terminals Anytime Day Return (CDR) is £11.60 (Railcard £7.65). It also takes Restriction LW.

My station has just gone unmanned (YVJ) I tried to buy one through the machine on the platform but the price coming up for a Zone 1-6 was £143 !!

I declined that but mentioned that I wanted one to the guard and he was happy to oblige !

My apologies - I have attached a screenshot. The date matrix is set for same day return, yet the 'cheapest' result the TIS throws back is the £10.10.

Most peculiar, and I should have read the conditions more carefully. My apologies once again!

Have just noticed the LM sale ticket - £3.85 CDR. Add to that the daily cap with a railcard (usually £8, now £5.30?) is a sum total of £9.15. Result!

Indeed. Assuming they've done it correctly of course!

Take it to the Underground ticket office at Euston and ask them to check. If they produce a full printout it should appear as "NR Railcard [expiry date]" in the discount lines under personal details.

Cheers. Is that the underground Underground ticket office, or the concourse level Underground ticket office?
