Waitrose is by far the best shop, though I have to question whether its ethical standards are as good as they like to think? I'd say their packaging and labelling is far worse than Sainsburys.

There was something about exactly that on TV a couple of days ago. Something to do with chicken, using water to add 'weight' and Waitrose using several times as much fat as the equivalent Sainsburys product...

We had a Kwik Save, which I think was taken over by Somerfields. But then that's now Sainsburys.

Somerfields ARE extict. They give out vouchers for free chocolate just so that people run around London looking for one of their stores!

Somerfield do exist, with over 900 stores. I used to be a slave in one! They are almot as bad to work for as to shop in.

Sainsbury's on the other hand are much nicer to work for and pay you correctly (most of the time). In 34 months, Somerfield paid me incorrectly 33 times.

ASDA and Sainsburys are a 10 minute walk, Tesco a 15 minute bus ride...

I'm not really sure what happened in the whole Kwik Save / Somerfield affair. At one point they used to be owned by the same company, but then the Somerfield section was bought out by another company I think, and the company split. It was all very confusing! However, Somerfield are far from extinct. Theres a good few around here. Sadly, they have downgraded our former Safeway supermarket into more of a convenience store, with mostly basket tills as opposed to checkout aisles, less floorspace although strangely, shorter opening hours :???:. The new Sainsbury's Local seems to be competing well with Somerfield now, and it's open better hours with better quality food

Somerfield Group (SF & KS) was bought by a Private Equity consortiuum. they then demerged KS into a company in its own right. That company later went bankrupt. There are suggestions it was a good way to get rid of poor stores. Prior to the split, the 'decent' KS stores were converted to SF, and thus remained within the SF company. When SF bought the Safeway Compact's they decided that what the UK population wants locally is metro style stores - thus SF focus on local stores selling stuff you might need between a big supermarket shop.

Meanwhile, back at the topic...

We stopped in Buxton last year for a bite of lunch on our way up to a cottage in the Yorkshire Dales. At least, I'm pretty sure it was Buxton. Anyway I like to stay off the motorways if at all possible, so we were heading up through the Peak District and then over the tops by way of Chapel-en-le-Frith and Glossop before dropping down into Huddersfield. It's a cracking bit of road that I've tackled a few times on two wheels and four. Anyhoo, we found a smashing little sandwich shop just off the market place that does a mean hot sausage and egg bap.

Or perhaps it was in Chapel...

Either way, the point I'm coming to is that the the advent of the big chains coming to town is not necessarily a good thing. Most towns and cities are now an indenti-kit version of each other because they all contain the same outlets. Gone are the days of the local independent retailer who knew his customers and could provide the kind of service that has become the stuff of legend. It's a sorry day. If it was indeed Buxton where we got our nosebag that day, I don't expect the sandwich shop will survive long in the face of the onslaught from the Starberks of this world. Try to find a hot sausage and egg bap and a tea at Pizza Express, KFC or any of the others and you'll be going very hungry.

It is a stunning bit of road, especially as you approach the Woodhead reservoir and the twist and turns there, and over the tops into Holme.

Except for the Sainsburys at C.T. and the Waitrose at Comely Bank, I didn't know they existed, so thanks. I've only been here since September, that's my excuse .

I know Mam Tor well - and would have thought the diversionary route up the Winnats Pass is spectacular (especially coming down )

I only ever rode the bicycle down Mam Tor once and it was a class road - but tended to do Winnats more especially having been out at Peak Forest/ Buxton area. Great scenery all around. Mind you I have to admit I didn't used to hang around in Buxton too long a quick look at what was on shed and straight back out

That was most likely the Corner Cupboard on the market place in Buxton.

I think this could have been a poor error by Somerfield, especially in the case of Cottingham. The Safeway had always been a small but proper supermarket, and was very well used for full shops as opposed to little top ups my many residents in the village (especially the high proportion of elderly people who live here!). Now they have almost shot themselves in the foot, as Sainsburys already offer a metro style store about 3 minutes walk away, with better quality food (on the whole) and cheaper prices often too! They also open 7-11 every day compared to Somerfield which is 8-8 Monday-Saturday and 10-4 Sunday. If Somerfield were heading more towards the metro format then they should have at least extended opening hours to compete with Sainsburys, and not cut them back (as they have done since the Safeways days!).

While we're on the subject of shops, I think I've just offended one of the checkout blokes in the Tesco Metro in Barbican (RJ knows the one). The heavily-accented ethnic chap serving me says something, to which I reply "Nah" (without fail the first thing they ask is "Clubcard?"). He then says something else to which I think to myself "Crap, he's said something else to me - that doesn't normally happen!!!". I decide to risk possibly offending him and say "Sorry?", to which he tuts, slams my change down in my hand and says "Next pleeeeeaaaase!".

It was just a tiny place with the counter along the back wall facing the door, and a little ledge with some bar stools where you can sit inside and eat. Decor was a bit bright, though.

Indeed. Somerfield plunged Safeway stores from high end (ie Sainsbury's end of the market straight to the ASDA / Co-op end of the market. The safeway compacts were mostly in fairly affluent areas / city centres, where people would pay more for the convenience (a principle still used by Tesco in their express stores)

Also, in england stores over a certain floorspace can only trade 6 hours on a Sunday - smaller stores can trade longer. In Scotland we have no such restrictions, and a 24hr store is normally 24/7
