Buxton Spa Express 26/02/2011

I'm confused about what route it is actually taking, no i'm probably being dim but i don't know alot of the junctions and how they get from one line to the other kind of thing (only recently realised westgate and kirkgate connected)

I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on the route of this tour between sheffield and brighouse as i am wanting to come from leeds to see this tour never seen a double headed railtour or anything in LMS crimson.

any knowledge apprecaited

Hmm, looks like it uses the WCML from Preston, diverging onto the northern section of the Liverpool - Manchester line towards Manchester Victoria via Eccles. It'll then run via Ashton Moss Junction to Stockport via Denton and Reddish South then down to Buxton.

Then it'll reverse at Buxton out of the station then reverse again to pick up the Midland Main Line freight line through Dove Holes Tunnel towards Chinley then diverge east to run over the Hope Valley to Sheffield, then via Moorthorpe to Wakefield Kirkgate, then the Caldervale Line via Brighouse to run back to Victoria.

Yeah that does cheers my only confusion is how it gets off the doncaster wakefield line to then go through kirkgate?

It will leave the Doncaster Line at Hare Park Jct which is between Fitzwilliam and Sandal to take what is normally a freight only line, then it will join up with the Kirkgate-Pontefract line just south of Wakefield.

Thanks alot never knew about that little bit of line thats what i was trying my best to find on google maps... for some reason i thought it was other side cheers

May sound a silly question but how does it pick up the freight line from Buxton? I live in Chapel en le Frith know the freight line (to go onto Chinley) and passenger line divide somewhere but haven't a clue where.

It reverses out of Buxton station slightly then reverses again, two spurs branch off the Buxton Line just before Buxton station, one runs towards Peak Forest Junction to go through Dove Holes Tunnel and up towards Chinley, the other runs to Hindlow Quarry on what was the Ashbourne Line.

Newbie here so please be gentle.

I am completely confused as to the route/times this train is set to run. The official website site seems to suggest a route Lancaster - Manchester - Brighouse - Sheffield (stop for an hour) - Hope Valley - Buxton (stop for two hours) - Manchester - Lancaster.

However, the timings shown in the first post on this thread suggest Lancaster - Manchester - Buxton (stop for two hours) - Sheffield (stop for 5 mins)- Brighouse - Manchester - Lancaster.

Which is right? I am intending to go the Sheffield to see the train but want to get there at the right time.

Any help gratefully received, Andy S

Hi,
I'll be in Buxton on Saturday, are there any better viewing positions than the Dove Holes bridge/station, alongside or just off the A6 & ideally where I wouldn’t need to trespass too far? Not too familiar with the area north of Dove Holes, and things are never quite as accessible as they appear on Google earth! Cheers.

I had a chance conversation with someone at work, and was told about the locomotives being in Buxton tomorrow....through this website and the links provided I almost know the right time and place to be to view........can someone just please tell me what Buxton SB and Buxton URS mean? Please don't be offended by my lack of knowledge, I have a genuine interest, albeit a very uneducated one at best.

Not entirely sure what it stands for but Buxton URS is the freight sidings just outside Buxton station, the train needs to reverse there so it can pick up the freight line which takes it up towards Chinley. Buxton SB is Buxton No.1 Signal Box, it would appear the train stops there to be signalled during the reversal.

Probably a bit late now, but Buxton SB is the Signal Box just south of the station and URS is the Up Reception Sidings a bit further south past the Signal Box, sometimes known as XYZ sidings or locally, as Donna Roo (sp?)

Was watching a local league football game at Chapel High School and saw the Buxton Spa Express. Had it not been for the rain I'd have been 35 miles away, never heard a steam train in person but it was pretty terrific

And a great tour it was, only problems, getting held at Great Rocks Jnc waiting for freight to leave. Probably signaller had not read his notices and didn't know we were coming, then more delay at Chinley for later path.

The freight train that caused the 10 minute signal stop at Peak Forest was the 14:01 Peak Forest - Peterborough. I believe it was signalled away near to time but actually left at 14:15.
It was booked ahead of the charter and had it left on-time wouldn't have caused any problem.
The charter actually passed Peak Forest box on time at 14:36 but following the freight meant it lost its path through the Hope Valley and that caused the subsequent late running.
I would hazard a guess that the delay in departing was down to the driver being tardy in walking from the DBS signing on point to his loco.

Thanks for that Blackfive. After that we struggled and only made up a bit of time at the Brighouse water stop by only topping up Leander and the word was 'we hope 44871 will have enough to get to Castleton'...
