There are no trains between Stockport and Sheffield today.
I can find no indication as to the route for the Rail Replacement Service.
Last time the journey by bus was from Stockport to Manchester then Woodhead, M1 and Parkway(A 57). Twice the distance and two and a half hours!

Today there are two other bus alternatives-
Shortest-a stopping bus service from New Mills Central(train from Stockport to New Mills Newtown then walk via the Rock!).
Fastest-a through bus service to Chesterfield then train to (diverted) Sheffield.

Could I go via Chesterfield?

You don't need to walk past the Rock Tavern, just down past Torrs Mill, though in reality it is very unlikely the RRB would go down the hill to New Mills Central but would use the Bus station at the top of Union Road.
I would be tempted to go Stockport-Buxton by train, and then Buxton-Sheffield on the 65 bus.

Normally the Torrs Mill route is the way I would go if going from station to station but I said via, I not want to pass the Rock Tavern! I would quite happily use it as a Waiting Room.
The path down from the Rock and directly up to the bus station would be better than down the steps passed Torrs Mill, also the embankment bridge is closed.
the embankment bridge is closed.
Probably faster to use the road bridge.
Buxton-Sheffield on the 65 only one afternoon bus on a Weekend

I'm surprised that they dont have a RRB from New Mills Central put in at Newtown, I've got the shortest route to Chinley (that a bus could cope with) as being via the A6

Yes; booking engines will offer this journey when it is the fastest route, and it is valid to do so (due to the replacement bus; not normally of course!)
