They are horrible.
I went on a dartline rail replacement coach a few years ago and it is why I hate dartline.
3+2 isn’t permitted on rail replacement and If the controller realises they get sent away.

Seems a bit silly if that's the case... a 3+2 RRB is surely better than no RRB?

I refer back to my view that because of the width of the seats and the pitch that they are not safe for adults to use because they cannot safely sit in one seat and use a belt. The law doesn't prohibit that, but it should, and I'm glad the railway will not allow them.

I think it's one of those cases where it's better to "cut your nose off to spite your face" else the wretched things would be showing up everywhere. If you want high capacity, you want a decker.

As a primary school teacher, I hate it when a trip ends up on a 3-2 Coach. Especially when the adults have to be scattered through the coach, and not all sat at the front as many assume.

Also remember going on a school rugby tour once that included a trip down from Lancashire to Stansted. On the way down Travellers choice provided 2 coaches but on return trip we were met by one plaxton coach with 3-2 seating. Lots of adults and a school rugby team was an awful journey back and we had to make an unscheduled services stop as lots felt sick.

Along with the Highlands too. A few years ago, I ended up on a (cramped) Stagecoach Plaxton B7R with a 3+2 layout from Kyle to Portree (Skye). Not the most comfortable of vehicles!
Yes I remember getting a bus from Portree a while back which was 3+2 seating and had schoolkids on it but it was definitely a service bus. I was able to fit in the seats (legroom is more of an issue for me than width ;)) but many people would have struggled to sit 3 abreast in such seating.

Under my stone....
They should be banned by all firms but that's another topic I guess. PSVAR is a bigger tick box and to kick off a 3+2 means also kicking off a PSVAR.
There aren't that many rail replacement operators in the UK - there's Arriva and First doing most of the work. RichW is correct that First don't allow them on their rail replacement contracts. Turn up with one and it's sent away. It's interesting how Dartline were using one - unless of course they were covering for CrossCountry trains, in which case, First Travel Solutions didn't procure the vehicle, that would be Arriva. I believe that they do work for Arriva as well as First.
As a coach driver I only work for operators that don't run 3+2seated coaches. My preference is for something around 16 seats with a blue oval logo on the front. I earn as much as someone driving a larger coach, but have a lot less trouble to contend with!

You do get some every now and then.
As I've mentioned above, it depends who is hiring the coach. There's not too many rail replacement providers, and First don't allow them. A switched on controller (there is usually one on such jobs) would spot such a vehicle and send it back to the operator without payment.

I believe recent cross country replacements here in the southwest have been contracted through National Express travel solutions.

It's neither of those 2 firms. They don't do 'most' of the work though, perhaps in that area but not overall.

It's the other 2 main RRB operators. 1 rarely has staff and with the other one I've seen coordinators report the 3+2. The firm only has 3 PSVAR buses, of which 2 are 3+2 so the firms must know that when booking 2 or 3 buses from this operator, you're going to get an unsuitable coach. It's a regular provider in the area.

There is a rather bizarre 3+2 seated wheel forward Wright Streetlite currently offered for sale by Stafford Bus Centre.
