A very tight geographic area in Newcastle and big 3 have maintained strong networks generally. There are some though like Gateshead Taxis but only on tendered work.
However, elsewhere in the North East, there are plenty where Arriva in particular have drawn their horns whether that are long established operators like Scarlet Band and Weardale or newer firms like JSB.
The big 3 have pretty much all of Tyne & Wear sewn up, and also the adjacent parts of County Durham like Stanley/Consett/Peterlee & Durham.
You get a bit of Gateshead Central Taxis in Gateshead and others running Nexus Bus minibuses, the vast majority of schools (or scholars as they call them) are also in the hands of various independents.

Go-Ahead seemed to acquire a number of independents over the years; e.g. Low Fell Coaches, OK Travel, Stanley Taxis and Northumbria Coaches all spring to mind.

Go North East bought all the independents! They bought OK Travel, Low Fell, Northumbria Coaches and Stanley Taxis. And in County Durham they also hoovered up Jayline.
The "reinforcement" (shall we say) of patches between Go and Arriva didn't help, which saw off the likes of Tyne Blue Line (not that this was a bad thing).
In the city, Stagecoach used Magic Bus to successfully dissuade any competition.
In County Durham you do still have Weardale and Scarlet Band running the stuff Arriva and Go don't want. Same in Northumberland with Travelsure and Perrymans.
And some Nexus tendered stuff is with taxi firms like Gateshead Central and Phoenix, though Go have been going after the latter recently.
