Bus/Train spotting trip in Edinburgh & Glasgow

Hi guys,

Looking for some advice on best places to spot a few buses mainly.

End of Feb I have 2 day trip planned up to Edinburgh, stay over night, travel over to Glasgow in the morning and then home.

I won't get to Edinburgh until around 13:30 on day one and I'm only interested in the "big boys" (stagecoach/first etc, Lothian buses I'm not fussed about) can anyone recommend the best place to see these?

I'm also considering hoping on a local train to Dunfermline town as I know stagecoach have a depot that way, does anyone know if this would be a worthwhile journey or is it a fairly quiet area and not worth the hour travel I would lose going there and back?. Would I perhaps see the same stagecoach buses if I stayed in Edinburgh?.

On day 2 I only have roughly 1hr in Glasgow between train connections, I was thinking of going to Buchanan Street bus station but I'm coming in and departing out of Glasgow Central, so realistically I'm not sure how much time I would get at the bus station once I made it there. Is that the best place for number or can someone suggest just as good a place for bus numbers but nearer to Glasgow central station so I can get a little more time spotting.

I can't help you with the others but with regard to seeing stagecoach/first in edinburgh they run very few buses within the city itself compared to lothian they mostly run buses from outside the city in so you best bet is probably somewhere like princes street pretty central to see them all come in though no doubt others may have other suggestions

Princes Street either at the junction with Frederick Street or at the West End is where you'll see most.

NO......why wasnt that an option when i bought from national rail website?!. £8.50 Edinburgh Haymarket - Glasgow Central!

The Dunfermline depot is literally 10 minutes walk away from the station, cross to the other platform, come out of the station turn right, walk to the end of the road, turn left at the roundabout, go past the garage and carry on walking to the next roundabout and the depot is on the right. Chances are you would different stuff to the Edinburgh stagecoach stuff. But to be honest I don't think there will be much there.

As for Glasgow central, go outside and walk round the outskirts of the station and you will find Hope Street and Argyle Street which is usually busy with Firstbus stuff.

Because you searched for Edinburgh to Glasgow, not Neilston to Tweedbank! You won't be told of a cheaper ticket for a longer journey.

There's nothing more to say, other than you can buy a Neilston to Tweedbank Anytime Day Single for £1 at present, and likewise Tweedbank to Neilston Anytime Day Single for £1.

You can book as far ahead as early April on most booking engines, if you need to book beyond that use thetrainline to book up to late July.

Note that the £1 fares may disappear any moment now, though we've been saying that for the past two weeks!

Thanks swanny. If the depot in Dunfermline is likely to be empty can you recommend anywhere in Dunfermline where I can maximise my spotting opportunities (not too far from the station please.... I'm lazy/old/fill in random reason here.

The new bus station is in Dunfermline town centre so you get a lot of the stuff from the Depot on local runs and some of the Leven depot stuff comes through (I think they cover the Glasgow to St Andrews runs), again the bus station is a 10 minute walk but uphill whichever way you go.
