Why do many bus stations in the UK outside London have a drive-in/reverse-out design?

I would like to understand what the benefits of this design are compared to a sawtooth-style design, such as those in London, a pull-forward design, such as bus termini in Hong Kong, Victoria bus station in London or Barnstaple bus station, or simply using on-street bus stops, with buses travelling through the town centre to terminate at the edge of the town.

From my understanding, the drive-in/reverse-out design has some limitations, such as reversing manoeuvres increasing the workload of bus drivers and potentially reducing bus throughput, and its inability to accommodate buses with multiple doors, which is why it is less common in London and continental Europe.

It is also possible to accommodate more stands on a smaller piece of land than a sawtooth. Reversal off is a drawback but any risk can be reduced through a traffic light system for each stance such as that at St Andrew Square, Edinburgh or by an inspector blowing a whistle e.g. Galashiels Interchange.

Luton Airport bus station has such a traffic light system, but it seems to be causing significant delays, with buses and coaches sitting at bus stands waiting for the light to turn green before they can reverse. It can be a couple of minutes at busy times.

That is a common design in London, such as at Walthamstow Central or Vauxhall. However, with this design, there must be at least one crossing point, a footbridge, or an underpass for pedestrian access. At Walthamstow Central, one of the entrances to the Tube station is conveniently located on the island, making interchange easy. At railway stations, an optimal way to implement a bus interchange would be to create a large sawtooth bus station with a single island above the platforms, with access to the ticket hall and platforms in the middle of that island.

They’ve developed that way because you can get more stands in a smaller footprint and because you just have one passenger concourse.

There are other ways to do it, such as at Middlesbrough where the buses go up and over the concourse, but they cost money.

One of the new London bus stations (I forget which, maybe Kingston?) is drive in/reverse out. How they’ve got around the middle door issue is by making disabled people wait at a special stop by the bus station exit and hope that the driver sees them.

How that ever passed disability regulations I don’t know. Forcing wheelchair users to wait somewhere else, in a new build, and in London of all places doesn’t sound very 21st century.

Guildford Bus Station is an interesting design. About half of it (13 stops) is a drive in and reverse out format and half of it (11 stops) is a normal pull forward bus stop design. Quite odd to see a bus station with two stop types.

This map here shows the layout well:

I always wondered why they chose this arrangement when they built the bus station. Why not one or the other. Maybe it maximises space.

Wythenshawe is an example of this. It works but it does mean the buses all have to drive in a big loop of the station, which given the speed is limited to 5mph can feel like a bit of a chore*!

Another example is Manchester Piccadilly Gardens, which has the same problem of buses having to drive in a loop, except there are also traffic lights halfway through the station because the tramway cuts through, making it even more painfully slow. It's also just awful to use as a passenger - it's chaotic, overcrowded, and has no indoor waiting area, no live information, and nowhere near enough stands meaning many routes have to use an assortment of other stops along Piccadilly and the surrounding streets. Most of those problems have nothing to do with the layout, of course.

There are also loads of examples of bus stations small enough that they don't even need the bays on both sides and can be very compact just because they don't need much capacity.

*It doesn't make much sense to me that a bus station - where where the roadway is fenced off from the public areas, there are lots of warning signs, and everyone there is expecting buses to be driving around because, well, that's what tends to happen in bus stations - apparently needs a much lower speed limit than the open road where all kinds of risks are present. But whatever.

Transport for Greater Manchester seem to like building bus stations like this. Ashton, Bolton, Middleton, Rochdale and Stockport all have a row of reverse-out stops along one side of the building and conventional drive-through stops on other parts of the building.

I believe there are only two bus stations in Greater Manchester which have entirely reserve-out stops, and no drive-through stops at all, those being Manchester Airport and Wigan.

If you want a small bus station, I recommend Hayfield in Derbyshire. It is called a bus station but consists of one stand. Which really is one bus stop in the village car park (that once was the railway station).

Nearby is New Mills Bus Station which has two stands. It is isn't really sawtooth though.

I know it’s a bit of an old worn out thing to say ‘heath and safety gone mad’ but the 5mph speed limit at Manchester bus stations is certainly up there. It’s stupidly slow, and yes driving all the way around Wythenshawe bus station takes an age. It’s similar at Ashton, Rochdale and all the others with a fairly large footprint.

Manchester Piccadilly Gardens is probably up there as one of the worst terminals in such a major city, whether that’s the main bus station or the stops on the side streets. The fact there isn’t any real time or digital information at all, neither at the stops or on a central screen makes it feel like you’ve stepped back in time. To be honest the entire area, the bus station and the so called gardens itself needs a complete rethink. I imagine any rethink would probably result in the bus station being removed though.

Different Union agreements at the time. Alder Valley's were happy with "reverse off" sawtooth design, London Country's (with their LT heritage) were not, so were "banished" to the stops in Commercial Road. Similarly at High Wycombe, where LCBS did not use the main bus station.

Trafford Centre is also entirely drive-in reverse-out.

Sheffield Interchange (Pond Street bus station), Rotherham Interchange and Doncaster Frenchgate all follow this 'sawtooth' design with several islands. Lesser so with Sheffield's as it's practically a square, but Rotherham and Doncaster's interchanges are a pain to walk the length of if you're on a tight connection. Barnsley, also in South Yorkshire has a lovely drive in/back out bus station that avoids this issue (mostly).

Another local example I want to bring up is Worksop. It's your classic drive in/back out example, but with a nasty twist. To reverse a bus out of the bay, due to the limited room, you have to start turning whilst reversing. This is contrary to the standard of reversing straight back and turning once able to move forward. It's exceptionally difficult if there's another bus immediately next to you!

Being from Chesterfield, I'm oh too familiar with having to cross the entire cobbled town centre to change between services as we have no central bus station. Changing between say a 10 from Newbold, dropping off on Elder way at the top of town, to an 84 to Holymoorside, which drops off on New Beetwell Street. It's a fair trek if you're not able-bodied.

Perhaps another topic, but what about bus stations that don't fit their service levels. There's plenty of examples of bus stations being too small (see leeds), but are there examples of one being too big? I'm aware of Preston being practically halved I'm going to open another thread :D

As others have said the primary driver is passenger/pedestrian safety, in that Drive In/Reverse Out (DIRO) bus stations can be set up so prospective passengers do not need to cross a bus movement to access their bus stop and this then has the added benefit of minimising the length of the site for the number of departure stands as your dimensions are based on the width of a bus rather than its length. By having a single waiting area it can, if the land owner wish to spend the money, then be better secured & supervised and more effectively and cheaply covered to make a comfortable waiting area. Stand capacity isn't really any different in a DIRO bus station to either of the 'drive through' styles really, you may be able to double-load buses on a stand in emergency but unless the bus station is very wasteful of space doing so blocks multiple stands as a bus is now sat in the roadway preventing any bus leaving the stands behind or accessing the stands in front until it moves. DIRO is the most efficient usage of limited city centre space whilst allowing the best passenger waiting space, if that is what you want - all of the options have advantages & disadvantages so each site needs to be assessed individually to work out what fits best with the constraints, needs and requirements that site has.

I would say that the fact that few places outside London were still buying dual door buses by the end of the seventies meant that this design was optimal rather than this design pushing operators to single entrance vehicles. Also a sawtooth or pull forward type is no guarantee of being able to deploy dual-doors, look at the West Midlands that have pull forward designs but you still can't use 2-doors as the gaps and pavements are only long enough for a single-door to be used. There are few places or even routes where a dual-door vehicle maximises the advantages of that layout (London is the clearest with a very large but ill-defined centre and lots of overlapping passenger flows in the suburbs due to how settlements have merged into one large conurbation - most places have a small defined centre served by only a few stops and small contra-flow usage to result in large numbers boarding and alighting at the same stop) to justify the disadvantages (cost/complexity of a 2nd door & safety/insurance issues around an unsupervised doors).

Kingston Cromwell Road bus station is the one in TFL area that has a mix of sawtooth stands & drive through stands, drivers drop passengers off at the drive through stands then proceed to the sawtooth stands to layover.

Warrington is entirely drive in reverse out which replaced the old Golden Square bus station which was a dump, the issue with Warrington there is no map showing which routes stops where, although there is an electronic board that shows next departures, but that's at one end of the bus station, near stand T, not helpful if you bus is from the stands by Warrington's Own information office at the other end of the bus station.

Bit of a pet subject for me, as I did some research on it at university. There are three prevalent design concepts but obviously a myriad of different designs and applications, and to get the terminology right.

Sawtooth or en-echelon design - these typically consist of stands/bays on a 45 degree angle (but some may be more or less acute) that are drive in and reverse out because it looks like the blade of a saw. They typically have a single concourse and a single row of bays - Huddersfield is a classic of the design. Some have perhaps with a set of linear stops on the other side. Bath is a good example of this, and is Kingston.

The advantages is that it can be accommodated on a smaller footprint of land, all facilities and utilities are included in one area, and the general public should be segregated from the bus manoeuvring area. The downside is that each stand has a limited capacity per hour because of the extra manoeuvring and this increases risks of vehicle collision, and it is also difficult for vehicles with centre exits and wheelchair ramps fitted therein. There have been some double sawtooth designs with bays on both sides - Darlington was like that and Leeds still is with the coach station on one side and buses on the other.

End on - another variation of drive in/reverse out with a single concourse area. The stands are at 90 degrees. This means that you need a shorter length of land but more manoeuvring area; in essence, a square patch of land rather than a more rectangular one for a saw tooth. However, being end on means both a larger swing area for vehicles, more blind spots, and therefore more risks of collisions. In a previous life, it was well known that Oxford and the old Gloucester bus stations were bad for vehicles losing mirrors etc. Preston is the biggest and most notable, and was also two sided.

Run Through - if you want a simple design where reversing is taken out of the equation, then simply have long platforms of stops that buses pull into. These also allow a greater capacity per stand. The downside is that for larger bus station, you need more space and potentially several islands of platforms that need to be accessed via pedestrian crossings across roadways - this was the case at the old Wolverhampton bus station but it was rebuilt so that you now have three islands but linked with a single building (a hand with three fingers). As part of my university studies, I wrote to Centro (the old West Mids PTE) to ask why they didn't go for saw tooth designs unlike say WYPTE, and their response was about balancing the risk of reversing with passenger crossings as well as the capacity needed per stand per hour.

As mentioned elsewhere, there are variations such as Middlesbrough's horseshoe of run through stands; Sheffield interchange and Rotherham are also essentially a run through design not a saw tooth even if they do have a small angle built in.

Another thing that @Dwarfer1979 reminded me about was that in ye olden days with rear loaders, some bus stations were reverse in, drive out - Bedford is the one that sticks in my mind for that.

As for the mention of Hayfield.... There is a whole sub-genre of pathetic bus stations where the grand term is at odds with the facility. Faves of this are seemingly concentrated in the West and Wales with Cinderford and Monmouth being fine examples but Nailsworth is a beauty - a saw tooth with two stands and one shelter located betwixt them.

I preferred the 'run through' style like Merseytravel use at all there Bus Stations and it works no reversing (not sure if the new St Helens one will follow this however as not seen any photos of what it will look like)

Bradford Interchange is an example of all the different types of bus stations.

Its initial form was six islands of 20 run-through stands on each island, although the stands were built too close together so, in practical terms, only half the stands on each island could be used.

It was rebuilt in the late 90s as one central island, with DIRO saw-tooth stands on one side of the island and drive-through stands on the other. It now has 30 stands in total on a footprint roughly 40% of the original bus station.

WYPTE bus stations tend to be better designed for reversing buses, with a reversing lane marked out between the stand and the running lane.

PTE bus stations tend not to have the commercial considerations that some council or commercial locations have, so they have a larger footprint to accommodate that.

One of the ones that annoys me is Stourbridge. It's a nice building in it's own right, but a missed opportunity. It is literally next to the train station so you could have built an integrated sawtooth bus station to combine bus and rail. Instead, you leave the train station, cross the roadway to an island platform housing a few stands, and then across another roadway to the main bus station building.

I'm not an integration zealot i.e. the bus station must be near the train station even if it's a mile from the town centre just because they do it in (insert Dutch town name) but lord, we really do miss some obvious ones in the UK to make it better.

It's exactly the same layout as was there before. It's not a new build. The pedestrian area was renewed because the structure was falling apart. The actual layout is unchanged including the arrangements for wheelchair users.

I think a key reason the UK uses sawtooth and end-in so much compared to other countries is that the UK mostly uses single-door buses, whereas most other countries use dual-door. Without large gaps between stops for "platforms" from which both doors can be reached (as on dual door buses wheelchair users often have to use the rear doors), these designs aren't suitable for dual door buses.

In London where dual door is the norm except some small single deckers, these designs don't really exist.

The old Edinburgh bus station was also a mix of formats. Stances A-D were drive-through, Stance E, the tours and Citylink stance was drive in/reverse off.

Ditto the current Shrewsbury. Drive-in / Reverse off for stands A - M. Stands N, P, R & S drive-through.

Basingstoke, Winchester and Penzance are similar, with the main bus stations being saw tooth designs but with stands elsewhere on easier to access roads (eg Coach stops).

Interestingly both Basingstoke and Winchester have had the saw tooth directions reversed over the years during their subsequent rebuilds.

Redditch bus station has had several incarnations over time including reverse in drive out and currently drive through, each rebuild being a worse passenger experience than its predecessor
