One peculiarity, which didn't last long, and which think was the only example of this is London, was the 228A and 228C - a circular route, with "A" Anticlockwise and "C" Clockwise

There's loads of routes numbered like that in NX-land. Often even if the loop is just a small one at the end of a journey.

Bath's most modern route (vehicle and improvement -wise) is an A/C combination (20A/20C)...

Well Leicester's circular route has different numbers, eg. 47/48.

My dad got confused once when he came to visit and took buses of the same number into town and back. Needless to say it was a long journey back. 45 minutes vs 15.

And what makes it worse is that the Stagecoach Warks 48 also serves Leicester... the 48 goes from Coventry and Nuneaton to Leicester via Hinckley (except when it goes to Tamworth via Atherstone instead...)

And there was a W21 in Walthamstow (though Waltham Forest would do for this too)... And some of the "Wood Green" Ws don't go close to there; some never have...

And C has had various uses... originally, in Croydon; then later "Central", but the C2 was the "Camden hoppa" when it (most foolishly) was converted to midibus operation; not sure what the C in C11 was intended to stand for - Camden (borough) again, maybe; I might have suggested Cricklewood but I don't think it went there when it started...

There were, briefly, B routes in Barking. And for much longer, a B1 in Bromley.

Technically, the H1/2/3 are Hampstead Garden Suburb, quite a different place from Hampstead itself...

There was an M1 in Merton/Mitcham/Morden

The P4 didn't (and doesn't) go near to Peckham....

There are some R's in Richmond

There used to be not just an S2, but also an S1 and S3 in Stratford. Think there was another unspecified "S" somewhere round Lewisham too relatively recently.

H buses also serve Hounslow, Hayes and Harrow. S prefix routes also serve Sutton.

U buses only seem to serve Uxbridge and it's surrounding areas in Hillingdon (an interesting anomaly). K is the same for Kingston.

There's only one TfL run A route now, the A10 from Uxbridge to Heathrow.

Not just Arriva actually. First has run 25/26 as opposite directions on the Mowmacre Hill circular since it joined the two routes up a few years ago.

I echo the sentiment about the stupidity of having two routes of the same number in the same city, which isn't exactly a rarity in Leicester, with First and Arriva's 26, and Thurmaston and Arriva's 51, etc, all operating on completely different routes.

I think it's worse when the routes are similar but not identical. What happens if two companies' buses with the same number and destination turns up, and you know that they share similar routes without knowing the specifics of said difference so you get on the first one that arrived - only to find that the one bit you care about is also the one bit it doesn't serve? As an example, back home until 2003 both Arriva and First ran a 2 along near identical routes - but they had a difference just west of Pitsea. (It isn't a problem now; the AS 2 was withdrawn and replaced by an extended 5.)

A well known circular route to use this convention is the Outer Circle in Birmingham, 11A Anticlockwise and 11C Clockwise.

You want to try Chester where there 3 no 1s couple of 3s 9s & 10s, although in the City Centre they stop at different stops, regular passengers don't have a problem with them.

I believe the outer circle in Leicester is 40/41.

Liverpool used to have bus services starting with H (usually Crosville) as well as some L's and X's.
