Bus Replacement Walk

We're familiar with rail replacement buses, but this is the first time I've heard of a bus replacement walk.

#Porth Due to roadworks in Hopkinstown the road is closed. People will still be able to travel to/from Cardiff as we have a bus each end of these works and are walking people between them so they can continue their journey with a little disruption as possible. Open approx 12pm.

It's not as uncommon as you think... when a barge hit Hammersmith Bridge a few years ago and it was closed to all traffic... bus passengers had to walk across the bridge between buses. A similar thing happened in Yorkshire a number of yrs back and was reported in Buses, operated by Jaronda Travel IIRC. And didn't it also happen in the lake district after the disastrous flooding a couple of yrs back?

Similar sort of arrangement in Petersham (near Richmond SW London) due to a major hole in the road - on routes 65 and 71 for quite a while 1979 / 80 (photo - not mine - here)

Same happens in Newhaven when they shut the swing bridge to road traffic. (Although I believe last buses are diverted 'fast' back to Brighton as that's where the depot is)

I can remember something slightly different happening in Halifax in, I think, in 1968.
Before Burdock Way and the new bridge over the Hebble Brook were constructed. the main exit towards Bradford and Leeds was over the old North Bridge. At one stage, the cash-strapped council put a weight restriction on the bridge, which meant that empty Hebble buses could pass over it, but not full ones. So passengers had to alight at one end, then follow their bus over the bridge, before rejoining it at the other!

Many years ago the Doncaster to Goole bus service, operated by Blue Line, was operated in two parts. Rawcliffe Bridge had a weight restriction and at the start of the day a bus was run from the depot at Stainforth via the main A614 road to the north side of Rawcliffe Bridge and left. So each hour the bus from Doncaster terminated at the south side, passengers and crew ( driver and conductor in those days) walked over the bridge, boarded the other bus and carried on to Goole. Same procedure coming back.

The bridge of the Dutch River has long since been rebuilt, and there is no longer a bus between Doncaster and Goole, or indeed Thorne and Goole. The hourly Northern train service calling at Thorne North and Goole, plus the hourly fast Doncaster to Goole are the only public transport links today.

I'm curious - does the 88 not run from Thorne anymore - the EYMS one?

I couldn’t find it yesterday and just checked at SY PTE Timetable finder - the only 88 in South Yorkshire is Stagecoach in Sheffield. Maybe East Riding have withdrawn funding for their part, and in South Yorkshire the service serves little use. Moorends to Thorne has regular First buses.

Book 3 of the current Derby Resignalling temporary timetable has a walk of two-thirds of a mile from Cromford - which I suppose is a kind of rail replacement walk and a rail replacement bus replacement walk.

When Croydon trams were doing track renewals in about 2010 at East Croydon, they were using the temporary stop at Dingwall Rd. I *think* there was a period where you had to walk between Dingwall Road and East Croydon to make a cross-Croydon journey.

More research! EYMS route 88 does still operate - 3 days per week, one trip each way, and only between Goole and Rawcliffe Bridge, supported by East Riding Council.
