Bus museums in Europe

Anyone know of any bus museums in Europe? I was thinking about a European trip in May and was wondering if anyone can recommend any.

Not a bus museum as such, but the museum of public transport in Prague has a couple of buses alongside lots of trams. You can ride a scheduled vintage tram there on weekends, and during the week it is served by museum cars of the Tatra T2/3 type, as well as by some of the older T3 still in normal service on lines 1 and 2. the dpp prague website has details.

There's the Urban Transport Museum of France in Chelles, which is a short train ride east of Paris (Chelles-Gournay RER line E / Transilien line P - then a 25 minute walk).

However it is only open a limited number of Saturdays through the summer.

If you also like train museums, then Cité du Train is in Mulhouse, in the far east of the country. It is one of, if not the largest train museums in Europe.

Another museum I know of is the Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne - I think it is more of generic transport museum, but it is known for having a building clad entirely in traffic signs! Other museums tend to be tram or train specific.

There used to be a museum in Copenhagen run by the local transport authority: it closed in 2003, but I believe that most vehicles went to Sporvejsmuseet Skoldenæsholm. Unfortunately, I don’t think it is easy to reach by public transport.

EMT Madrid have retained a wide range of buses they’ve operated in one of their depots, and the Museum appears to be open to the public every Saturday and Sunday between April and November. More details available at the link below, though it hasn’t been updated since the final open days of 2022.

The Lisbon tram museum also has a good number of buses, including the rather strange sight of some mirror images of traditional British double deckers.

This is a good museum located at a tram / bus depot. On my last visit there a few years ago there was also a craft market at the opposite end of the site which had a couple of deckers parked on top of shipping containers. To get to it requires a walk through the depot.

This is a good museum located at a tram / bus depot. On my last visit there a few years ago there was also a craft market at the opposite end of the site which had a couple of deckers parked on top of shipping containers. To get to it requires a walk through the depot.

No sign of that when I visited in October. The museum is in two parts - a display of various artifacts, then you get shuttled by tram to the shed where the trams and buses are.

Tram 39 and 44

Incidentally, the 44 is my favourite tram route, as it goes through scenic forest and still uses the PCC cars. If you went to the museum, I’d recommend also travelling on the 44 to its terminus at Tervuren (which actually goes over the Brussels border into Flanders).

Sadly I’ve never been to the Tram Museum, as my many trips to Brussels have always been on weekdays, but it does look good and is still in an original tram depot (part of it still functioning as one). Next time I go, I must go over a weekend!

The transport wing of the Deutsches Museum in Munich showcases the work of MAN, including their buses.

There's some old Soviet buses on display at Riga Transport Museum, including a simulated ride on a bus journey to a wedding during the Soviet Union era (the commentary is in Latvian).
