A double-decker bus caught fire outside Warwick University in Coventry today.

Passengers aboard a National Express bus were evacuated by the quick thinking driver when his double decker bus became engulfed in flames on Gibbet Hill Road, shortly after 9am.

A spokesperson said: "When the driver noticed the smoke and flames coming from the engine compartment of his bus, he stopped immediately and then made sure that all the passengers were off before leaving the vehicle himself....

As a student, my curiosity got the better of me so I went for a nosey after my lectures. Fire broke out at some time between 9:30 and 10am.

What I've managed to find is it was NX Coventry Trident #4203.
-What I'm about to say is from campus security, so may not be entirely accurate-
Bus was empty, on the way to form a 12X. Driver correctly responded to the fire alarm, shut down and fled. He's been taken to hospital with smoke inhalation.

Being a Y-reg trident, it was to be scrapped towards the end of this year as the new buses arrived. Bus was towed away (front wheels weren't damaged, just a bit low on pressure),road appears to have reopened around 3pm following resurfacing.
The fire caused the evacuation of an accommodation block.

The tridents seem to have a bit of a thing for self-immolating.

Coventry appears to be getting a bit of a reputation for itself with all these fires, I believe we are on the 3rd one now?
