I’m moving to Kent soon and would like to find out prices for public transport. Does anyone know where I can find that information? Some operators such as Brighton and Hove share that on their website, but Arriva (yes I know their website is notoriously bad) do not. I can find day tickets but not singles.

Also, is the Discovery ticket (I think that’s what it’s called) still available? Am I right in thinking I could go from Chatham to Brighton on it via Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells?

The Stagecoach journey planner shows single fares for the journey you plan (unless the day ticket is cheaper, say where a change of vehicle is required)

Thanks, unfortunately Stagecoach no longer serve Chatham otherwise I would definitely find it easier!

Discovery ticket is £9/day and you could go from Chatham to Brighton via Maidstone & Tunbridge Wells as you describe. Broadly, the Discovery boundary covers Kent, West Sussex, East Sussex, Surrey, and some small parts of Hampshire

Bustimes.org lists fares although I have not verified the accuracy of the info.
It seems you have to manually type the "/fares" after the URL on the timetable page rather than go through a link. This lists child/adult single & returns.
Picking at random the Arriva 101 in the area you are interested in:

I generally would buy a day ticket which is usually advertised on the websites

If only making one journey, I’d ask the driver. With contactless payment cards it doesn’t really matter much if he tells you the fare is £2/£3/£4 for a single

I've used the Discovery ticket Chatham - Maidstone -T Wells -- B&H 29 to Uckfield/ Ashdown Forest/ Weald several times. Never had any problems.

Mentioning Tunbridge Wells, Metrobus operate into there. Fare tables on their website.

There was a thread that featured the Discovery Ticket not so long ago - 'Explorer ticket - SE England' (https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/explorer-ticket-se-england.231318/#post-5646335). Post #7 is particularly informative about acceptance.

I rarely have issues with Discovery tickets - the vast majority of smaller operators are used to them, although I have had a few Arriva drivers who question them if they see an independent's logo on the top. I think the biggest issue is that Discovery tickets are the only tickets that don't have a QR code and don't scan, so it's tempting to think it must be suspect.

Arrivaland fares are expensive, and are about to become more so - our second fares rise in a year. If you're travelling in an urban area and doing more than just a simple out and back, it is highly likely to be cheaper to buy a day ticket. It is cheaper after 7pm though (a flat single fare of £1.70), so you may benefit from doing some sums. There are long sections all with one fare: my local bus route is 25 minutes long, I live half way along (time and mileage), and I'm still on the highest fare for that route.

I second that. If the original poster starts from Chatham it should be fine, I would be a little more concerned if he was travelling Brighton to Chatham. I have had a few Arriva drivers who had never heard of them and certainly had never sold them (this would have been pre-pandemic).

Worth noting that Kent Thameside does not (as far as I know) accept Discovery.

Kent Thameside do accept the Discovery ticket, I’ve purchased the ticket a couple of times on the Fastrack B route…

Thanks for that. If they sell it, they must accept it. I was turned down once trying to use it on the Gravesend - Sevenoaks route when Arriva ran it (even though I had bought it from Arriva Kent and Surrey).

Sounds like a issue with that particular bus driver. I've used it on that service before (and around Gravesend/Dartford generally) without an issue. Haven't tried it since Redroute took over, but as it is now a Kent County Council tendered service (previously part commercial) there is the fact that KCC require acceptance of the Discovery ticket on all of their tendered services to help discussion!

Usually my trips involves a number of routes so a day ticket is my first port of call.

I managed to buy a discovery decker on a stagecoach service heading east from Winchester.

Likewise, I find most operators quite happily accept them - even if, as you say, the ticket has the "wrong operator" printed at the top - but the one operator I have consistent problems with is Diamond Bus South East.

My current job has me working all over the place, but my commute almost always begins with buying a Discovery ticket on a Stagecoach bus (much better value for the journeys I have to make).

Whenever I have to board a Diamond Bus using said ticket (with the Stagecoach logo printed at the top), every single time I'm met with utter cluelessness, and more often than not quite frankly appalling attitudes from drivers who tell you to your face that they (and I quote one driver) "do not care" to be educated on the validity of tickets and insist that I'm on the "wrong bus" and that I should get off.

Granted, I have come across a handful of lovely drivers on Diamond Bus, who - although clueless - were more than happy to take some friendly advice on Discovery tickets, one even admitting he'd never sold one before(!) - but the disappointing truth is that most of my journeys with them have had to begin with a dispute about ticketing, and that honestly makes me rather reluctant to use Discovery tickets (as useful and fantastic value as they are).
