Bus and Tram crash in Croydon - 1 dead

A man has died in an accident involving a bus and a tram in Croydon.

The crash happened at about 1000 BST on Sunday in George Street. The driver of the bus was taken to hospital.
Paramedics treated a number of other people at the scene but they did not need hospital attention. Two shop fronts and a car were also damaged.


Transport for London said: "Following a collision involving a route 468 bus and a tram, a person has been killed. We will carry out a full investigation."

Their statement went on: "Our deepest sympathies are with the family and friends of the person who died and those who were injured.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said it could be some time before further details were available, as officers were engaged at the scene trying to determine what happened.

Some roads in the area were closed while investigations were carried out.

As of 15:25 the silver BMW and route 468 bus are still on scene, with the tram involved currently sitting approximately 100 yards behind, just by the underpass.

Out of interest how does Tramlink operate when the loop is blocked?
Presumably Elmers End Beckenham and Addington Services can reverse at East Croydon but have no access to the Depot. Where do Wimbledon services terminate reverse?

If the line remains closed at close of traffic, the police assist in them going back "wrong road" round the loop back to depot.

The local media are now reporting that the fatality was a male passenger on the bus who went through the window of the bus, before then being run over by it.

..... through the UPSTAIRS front window according to later reports. Bus driver was arrested on leaving hospital, for questioning on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, and has been bailed (without charge so far) for further questioning i.d.c.

I once saw a passenger hit the front upstairs screen with his head when a jerk in a car pulled straight round in front of the bus when entering a Bus Lane. The chap was ok but smashed the glass with his head.
