Just been to Burton on Trent station to buy a ticket for tomorrow (22/06) for journey at 8am to High Wycombe returning 2pm

Bought a Anytime Return to Birmingham to connect to the 9.15 Moor Street to High Wycombe.

I was expecting to buy an Off Peak Return for this journey - I was however told that a Super Off Peak Return had no restrictions apart from had to be used on Chiltern.

Just got back and looked at NFM05 and it says:

By any train except those
timed to arrive at London
Terminals before 1345.

Does this mean I won't be able to use this ticket then and I've been told the wrong information?

Thanks,
James

NFM05 is out of date - I am now checking NFM06 for you.

EDIT:

NFM06 Says the same but it may not apply as you are not travelling to London - yorkie (our resident ticketing expert) may be able to help!

There are no Chiltern only fares from Burton on Trent (BUT) to High Wycombe (HWY). The fares are as follows (assumes no railcard):

BUT - HWY (Route Banbury)
Off Peak Return £42.20 (Valid any train at or after 0930, Return within 1 month)
Anytime Return £79.00 (Any train, return within 1 month)

Significant savings can be made by splitting at somewhere like Birmingham (BHM).

BUT-BHM
Anytime Day £12.80 (Any train, return same day)

BHM-HWY (Route Banbury)
Super Off Peak £19.50 (Out: Any train except those due to arrive London before 1345 Rtn: Any train due to depart London between 1100 & 1559 and from 2000. Return within 1 month)
Off Peak £27.10 (Out: Any train except those due to arrive in London before 1000 Rtn: Any train. Return within 1 month)
Anytime £47.60 (Any train. Return within 1 month)

(All are standard class, returns, no railcard)

The 0915 from Birmingham requires the expensive Anytime ticket, so you can get round this by splitting at Warwick (WRW).

BHM-WRW
Anytime Day Return £7.40 (Any train. Return same day)

WRW-HWY
Anytime Day Retuern £22.80 (Valid any train. Return same day).

£12.80 + £7.40 + £22.80 is valid at any time and is a total of £43.00, so the premium to travel at peak time is only 80p. CrossCountry want to defraud you to the tune of £37.00. This is a common scam, and can be avoided by splitting the ticket. Know your rights, don't be scammed!

None of the tickets above are restricted to any operator.

Yorkie:

Does the 9.15 train from Moor Street not arrive after 10am?
09:15 Birmingham Moor Street [BMO]
London Marylebone [MYB] 11:32

So is the off peak ticket not valid for this?

Yes, you're right. The Off Peak ticket can be used on the 0915. The Super Off Peak cannot.

But this is cheaper:

Burton to Warwick or Leamington Spa (it makes no difference) is £16.80 for an Anytime Day Return.

Warwick or Leamington Spa to High Wycombe is £22.80 for an Off Peak Day Return (Valid for arrivals into London at or after 1000)

The total is £39.60 - cheaper than the through off peak ticket, and cheaper than splitting at Brum.

You can even get Burton to Leamington and Hatton to High Wycome for that price and be "doubly valid" between Hatton and Leamington Spa. ;)

Thanks for that yorkie.

I already have the ticket bought already based on the advice of the person at the ticket office. Given that this ticket won't be valid what do I need to do - do I need to just excess the Birmingham to High Wycombe ticket to an Off Peak?

What ticket did you ask for and what did you get and what was the price?

If you asked for Burton to High Wycombe they shouldn't advise on the split, but it sounds like you asked to split it, and got an Anytime Day to Brum and a Super Off Peak from Brum to High Wycombe? Go back to the ticket office and either ask them to endorse the ticket for any train (if they're so sure!) or excess it.

The excess on a non-discounted Birmingham Stations to High Wycombe Route Banbury Super Off Peak (OPR) to an Off Peak (SVR) is £7.60. (This is calculated as £27.10 - £19.50)

I asked for an Anytime return BUT-BHM an Off Peak return Moor Street - High Wycombe leaving 9.15 returning 2pm. The lady stated 19.50 and 12.80. I said to her thats cheaper than what I was getting on the internet - she said its a Super Offpeak Return valid on the slower Chiltern Trains route. I said is there any restrictions on time and she said no anytime was fine. I went and purchased the ticket because I took her word and don't have access to the NFM06 so couldn't check.

I don't agree with your interpreation of the super offpeak restrictions for a Birmingham - High Wycombe journey.
BHM-HWY (Route Banbury)
Super Off Peak £19.50 (Out: Any train except those due to arrive London before 1345 Rtn: Any train due to depart London between 1100 & 1559 and from 2000. Return within 1 month)
.

Actually that is not what the super off-peak restriction says.
Restriction : PV
JOURNEYS TO/VIA LONDON
MARYLEBONE OR PADDINGTON

OUTWARD TRAVEL
MONDAY TO FRIDAY

By any train except those
timed to arrive at London
Terminals before 1345.

SATURDAYS AND BANK HOLIDAYS

By any train except those
timed to arrive at London
Terminals before 1345.

SUNDAYS

By any train

RETURN TRAVEL
MONDAY TO FRIDAY

By any train from London
Terminals timed to depart from
1100 to 1559, and from 2000.

SATURDAYS AND BANK HOLIDAYS

By any train from London
Terminals timed to depart from
1100.

SUNDAYS

By any train

JOURNEYS VIA READING

OUTWARD TRAVEL
MONDAY TO FRIDAY

By any train except those
timed to arrive at Reading
before 1315.

SATURDAYS AND BANK HOLIDAYS

By any train except those
timed to arrive at Reading
before 1315.

SUNDAYS
By any train

RETURN TRAVEL
MONDAY TO FRIDAY

By any train from Reading
timed to depart from 1130 to
1530, and from 2030.

SATURDAYS AND BANKS HOLIDAYS
By any train from Reading
timed to depart from 1130.

SUNDAYS
By any train
SSS/SSR/OPS/OPR/SOP
SUPER OFF-PEAK

There are sections for
JOURNEYS TO/VIA LONDON MARYLEBONE OR PADDINGTON
and for
JOURNEYS VIA READING

but neither of these apply to a Birmingham - High Wycombe journey so the super offpeak ticket from Birmingham - High Wycombe is valid at any time

I always assumed as you were on a train timed to arrive in London before 1345, irrespective of your final destination, the Super Saver would not be valid.

That is correct, but what collybs is saying is that there is no mention of any restriction for journeys that are not to/via Reading or London. Whether this is intentional or not is unclear.

Thanks Yorkie. I often use Chiltern SSR to Birmingham so if this ticket is valid as collybs suggested then it would be of benefit to me. I've been on trainline and the first train for which one can purchase a SSR is the 11.15 dep from BMO. This arr HWY @12.53 AND MYB @13.29. This clearly fails the test for "not valid on trains arr London before 1345." I'm drowning in confusion now.
