I don't know the area but is there no room for a short tunnel or viaduct given that one of the buildings at ground level is a custody centre and I don't think that's likely to be moved anytime soon, unless anyone knows any different.

It looks like you could get away with just removing the car park and leaving the building as-is? That large white roofed warehouse would have to go, which would free up land for a replacement car park.

I am definitely in crayon territory and will stop now.

Derby-Burton-(and then s-l-o-w-l-y)-Ashby-Coalville-(reversal required, but now somewhat quicker)-Leicester-Loughborough-Trent-Nottingham wouldn't be exactly the fastest or most direct route between Derby and Nottingham, though, would it?

It's not intended for Nottingham-Derby passengers though?

Not sure I understand your point? There are many trains that run between two stations via an indirect route where a quicker alternative exists, but it doesn't stop them being useful to some people

Pretty unlikely it would be able to get far enough up or down and back to ground level in the distance available.
OK,thanks for the local knowledge.Otherwise, it seems completely unfeasible because the compulsory purchase costs involved with rebuilding such a junction must be huge and it's questionable whether a compulsory purchase order would even be granted. Unless some of it is still railway land?

The redoubling of the line from Leicester to the Cliffe Hill (Stud Farm) & Bardon Hill quarries should be simple enough; as @jfowkes says, the Leicester area (Knighton Jn IIRC) is the main obstacle. Most of the curve linking the Burton line with Leicester (London Rd) station is redeveloped now, as so:

As I mentioned in this post (different thread on similar subject), I think it would be much cheaper to provide facilities for a quick and easy reversal. I've just got in mind a small platform so a driver can get out of one end and walk to the other. If that platform is part of a station, then great. However, it needn't be.

It looks like the residents of the trading estate have 99-year leases from 1974,with quite large rents and the estate owners bought it for £1.4 million in 1974 I think, so,with inflation, even compulsory purchase of one building would be expensive. Is there any room for reversing sidings to the side of the MML,where remaining track joins the southbound MML,where Leicester bound trains could reverse into, then reverse out onto the northbound MML back towards to Leicester and vice versa in the other direction. It would be a massive operational headache of course, but it might be a cheaper option to get the line reopened at first and,if passenger numbers started booming, the proper junction could be restored.

It sounds like we have the sane idea-although I don't know what impact it would have on journey times and path availability on the MML may be another barrier.

The Ivanhoe trains would have to cross the fasts, that's a big issue I suspect.

I'd advocate for full-blown grade separation of the junction like they might do with Wigston but I realise that's a hopeful fantasy rather than anything remotely likely.
