I am surprised (Merseyrail are the fare setter) that apparently it is not part of their regulated fares basket.
My recollection is that those flows which in total amount to the lowest 5% in revenue are excluded from the regulated basket. This fare is likely to be excluded in this way.

Does that mean a TOC could take each of its lowest 5% of revenue earners and increase them all by 150% in the new year without recourse? Sounds a little iffy to me.

The decision that "each fares basket ... will contain only those fares which together account for around 95% of revenue from all regulated fares" was one of the Conclusions of the Strategic Rail Authority's 2003 Fares Review. The justification given was that "Fares on less popular flows would in effect remain regulated ... by the limiting effect of fares from adjacent stations being regulated".

Though except in the case of anomalies like this one, they would have little motivation to do so.

And isn't it the case that if a fare is reduced on a short term basis, if you then put it back up it is only regulated to its old price, not its new lower one?

I would be surprised if erroneous pricing is not catered for somehow in fares regulation.

This fare is quite clearly a mistake, as much as we may want to keep it running.

Looks like the Eastham -> Burscough fare has been increased in price now - showing at £7.70.

Got some good use out of it while it lasted

Yes, me too.

However there are still plenty of anomalies in the Merseyside/Lancashire area - all one has to do is know how to find them ;)
