Am I correct in thinking that this ticket is via the East or West coast, vie Preston, I have used it previously with no issues but, when travelling south from Durham , with a single to York, had an issue with a train manager not wanting to accept it, eventually saying that she would let it go this time.

Can someone confirm if I am correct please.

Yes, it's valid via York, provided you have a ticket to York and your Burnley to London ticket allows break of journey.

Burnley Manchester Road is associated with Halifax Group and passes the fares check for travel that way to London.
Kings Cross is a routeing point.
Halifax Group to London Group is a mapped route via York as follows:

G39-G03-G16-YRK-DON-RET-G47-GRA-PBO-HIT-SVG-AAP-FPK-G01
Traceable on maps YN+KY
Permitted: Mapped route.

The reason for the TM's displeasure may be that there are "via Doncaster" tickets defined for a lot of Lancashire-London journeys, including this one, and so she may not be so used to seeing people with the "any permitted" version.
