Fairly regularly I need to travel to either Glasgow or Edinburgh and generally stay over for at least a night. To Glasgow I can get an off peak return valid a month for £28 odd . Edinburgh though is over £50. I'm guessing this is because they are priced by different companies. For various reasons advance tickets are not usually suitable as I need flexibility and for the same reason Megatrain doesn't really work.
I've done the Edinburgh via Glasgow a few times as you can sometimes pick up a cheap advance the day before and I know I can get an OP return to Glasgow then a XC only ticket to Edinburgh. But my question is this: is there a better way , by which I mean cheaper , of getting to Edinburgh. I have no railcard of any type , never need to arrive in Edinburgh til afternoon so always leave BUD after 10am and can be pretty flexible on the return journey. I tried to find splits without much success and looked at some other stations in the central belt.
Thanks for any advice.
