Transport 6.13 The 2008 Pre-Budget Report announced that £700 million of transport spending
would be brought forward from 2010-11 into 2009-10. £400 million of this will be used by the
Highways Agency to accelerate high value schemes on the strategic roads network. This
includes £100 million to dual the A46 from Newark to Widmerpool, with £300 million to
advance the managed motorway works on the M1 and M6 and to accelerate specific asset
renewal work and technology improvements across the network. Furthermore, the Department
for Transport is procuring around 200 new diesel carriages to boost rail capacity more quickly
than would otherwise be possible.

200 new diesel carriages for this budget then.

This sounds very much like the rolling stock being bought by Diesel Trains Ltd which was originally annouced a couple of months ago - so in reality, it isn't anything new!

Geoff Hoon, the Transport Secretary, refused to intervene. "They are private companies and have to make the right decision in there own commercial interests.
There is a range of fares out there and people have to look at them to make the right choice."

I hope that the electorate of Ashfield take note and vote accordingly at the next Westminster election.

i cant see mr adonis being too pleased about fare increases.

i certainly cant believe the train operators are so stupid other companies are cutting prices while rail fares increase.

i certainly aint voting 4 labour in the next election, i am even considering voting for the greeen party and the conservatives

I wouldn't vote for labour. Sadly, my vote won't make any difference as I'm either going to vote in Coatbridge, Chryston and Bellshill or Glasgow North.

As, in Coatbridge, Labour has the highest numerical majority (and I can guarantee that they will win the next election there), my vote there will make no difference whatsoever. That said, Tom Clarke's actually quite a good MP and a really genuine person (believe it or not), so it's not too bad for us.

Hopefully residents of Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath will do a good job for us and vote Gordo out, but I don't know if that would necessarily preclude him from being PM.

Well you never know? Well the city boys and the media people are having a good old moan about paying extra tax earning over £150k per year, my heart bleeds. If I hear one more person say 'hard working', as if everyone else under earning under £150,000 (99% of the population) ISN'T hard working or haven't studied I'll flip. £100,000 is more than enough for anyone to live on, £150k is privilege, even if you started from nothing. Its not that I think it's a good thing that people on over £150k have to be taxed more, I just find it very hard to really shed a tear over paying a little more to society, when they have more than enough, especially as some of them were involved in buggering it up through reckless speculation, screwing wages down, casualising working conditions, exporting jobs elsewhere, and objecting to any regulation in the first place. And after 2011, we'll ALL be paying anyway, assuming we aren't now through lost jobs etc.

As for the train fares, there's too many people moaning they don't want to pay tax, so even if the railways get a small portion of the transport budget, which is a small portion of the overall budget, its clearly something people think the users should pay more towards, either that or the rail companies should be more economic/more people use trains more especially on secondary routes.

Running income values through the BBC tax calculator, for a typical married man driving a couple of gas guzzlers, smoking and drinking a lot, the only people I could see worse off were on the £20k-50k bracket *shrug*

I can't see the budget being beneficial for a fairly large firm whose executives each drive company cars and drive long distances on motorways with fuel going up. Not like the train is a viable alternative option anyway as prices are going through the roof again.
