I'm going to Budapest on the weekend for a race, which is not in the city proper but in the suburban area, Göd, accessible by route S70. It is not a BHÉV (the suburban network run by the local transport authority, BKK) route.

I am looking for ticketing information on BKK website but I have found nothing about using these non-BHÉV suburban trains in its ticketing section. How do I pay the fare on these trains? Can regular BKK tickets, with the appropriate distance extensions for travelling outside the city proper, be used on these trains?

S70 is a MAV=national railways line going north along river Dunav toward Szob. There were landslides blocking it last summer, I dk if it has now been fully reinstated. Its daft simple: go to the station that has the trains going there, (Nyugati, under grand-scale reconstruction some 3-4 months ago) find any MAV=yellow machine, buy ticket-pay by card may give 3-5% off what are quite low fares anyway. Can also buy DAYreturn. Machines have /hu/ and /en/
No idea how close by that course is to station (palya-udvar in /hu/), but there is also a national all-transpo planner, menetrendek.hu (which means timetable) in /hu/ only but works with adresses. Or try googlemaps or openstreetmap first to check how far it may be.
A quick check showed me it has several stops, named alsö and felsö, as about all such stops in HU are named (upper and lower).

The race organiser has already supplied the route to access the event centre from the train station.

A further question to ask. I plan to return to the airport directly, by transferring to the 200E bus at Ferihegy after the race. There are some Express and Intercity trains from Budapest which requires a supplement to be paid. Can I pay the supplement on board by card without penalty in case the first departing train from Budapest is one requiring a supplement?

Also, I have read that from the website that buying from the app gives 10% discount from the ticket office price, while from the ticket machine there is 5% discount from the ticket office price. The app can produce e-tickets and mobile tickets which are non-transferable. Do you have experience in using the app, if it is easy enough for me to buy a supplement just before the train at Budapest departs? In addition, the airport website states that there is a discounted add-on available for the 200E bus (300 HUF, while the normal ticket is 350 HUF) when bought in addition to a train ticket from the ticket machine. Is that also available online / in the app as well?

Somehow it feels better getting a discount from a ticket machine rather than having to pay a surcharge to use a ticket office.

Of course it comes to the same thing...

(And in both cases the idea is presumably to discourage people from using ticket offices so they can shut them down on grounds of disuse).

No you can’t buy the supplements on board and they do usually check tickets before the airport. Just use the MAV app to select a train it’s really not difficult and it will sell you the required ticket/supplement/reservation all in one. No bus ticket machine at Ferihegy will need to have purchased in advance from elsewhere or use the BKK app.

So in this case, if the first departing train when I get into Budapest turns up to be a train requiring supplement, I must use the app to buy the supplement before boarding. Is that right?

I'm sure you can use ticket machines or office, or just get a non-supplement stopper which usually follows the fasts out anyway, they usually go from the high numbered bays.

The frequency of non-supplement trains is not great. Only 2tph out of 4 or 5tph are non-supplement trains.

I've done entire trips around Hungary where I've just bought tickets as I went along on the app, usually while waiting for the next train.

It's really easy to use, from experience.

Could you buy the 200E add on (stated as 300 HUF from the airport website as an add-on to the train ticket, in contrast to 350 HUF for a normal BKK single) from the app? It only mentions I can buy it from the ticket office or ticket machine at the station.

If not, I will buy my ticket from the ticket machine (the 50 HUF saving on the bus overweighs the addition 5% saving from buying in-app compared to the machine), and buy any supplement required en-route if the next train isn't a non-supplement train.
