Budapest photting

Off to Budapest tomorrrow - any suggestions on central stations/metros where good photos and/or locos could be found?

What are their attitudes to photography?

Keleti is the obvious one to head to, as most international trains arrive there and the building in itself is of great beauty. Nyugati is probably worth seeing to and it gets some services from Romania.

Also, don't miss out the children's railway ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gyermekvasút ), the cog railway (tram line 60 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Budapest_Cog-wheel_Railway ) and the 54m long Siemens trams running through the city centre (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Combino_Supra#Budapest ).

I spent a while at Keleti, before getting a train one stop out and taking photos there as well. No one minded at all, they don't care so much that you're welcome to cross the tracks if you want to and no one will stop you!

Here are some photos taken during my railway tour of Europe back in the 90's. These are the Budapest selection. I expect there has been many changes since then although I expect many of the locomotive types are still around. The station and Loco Depot at Szekesfehvar (From Deli Station) was very interesting as was the Goods Yard at Kelenfold.

I spent 2 weeks in Hungary last Autumn. Photagraphed on many stations and at the lineside with absolutely no problems at all.
In Budapest Keleti is worth a visit and as mentioned above passengers wander about on the track . I arrived on a train from Miskolc and was amazed to see many people leave the train and do this.
Deli is an ugly station and not worth visiting but Kelenfold is and can be reached by tram. Kelenfold has all passenger trains westbound from both Keleti and Deli pass through and plenty of freight. In 2 hours there I saw freight trains hauled by locos from MAV, OBB, Metrans, Constantin , MRCE and Slovakian Railways.

Kelenfold can also be reached by train. Best in the morning due to the position of the sun where freights park round the back. As Redonian says, a good variety of operators. I also couple of 86s there last summer (early in the morning, around 08.00-30 I think) which was good

The new Metro Line 4 has some interesting modern architecture - and operates from Kelenfold that has been mentioned in the previous couple of posts.

Even on this new metro line, attitudes to photography are quite relaxed. Last summer, I stood at the bottom of the escalator in the first picture of the link (Szent Gellert Ter) for about 15 minutes in the evening peak waiting to get a clear photo of the circulating area. Staff/security were milling around, but weren't bothered in the slightest and never said a word. Admittedly, not all the escalators were in use, as the station was actually quite lightly used, so as custom builds, this may now be more difficult.

Some of the older metro lines are also interesting for the timewarp feeling.
