The barriers at Paddington Circle Line would not let us through. GWR said it was TfLs problem, Ticketsplit refused to accept the tickets wouldn’t work and blamed TfL.

There is nothing in the OP's first (and only) post, quoted above, saying what TfL said about the tickets; Did the OP not show their tickets to their staff at the barrier and ask to be let through, and if they did and were refused, did the TfL staff say why?

I agree and every customer has a right to demand their costs when they are out of pocket.

I was just highliting that the OP choose to incur costs no reasonable person would have done. He had the choice to use the tube via contactless or even cash. He was already at tube station, but chose to go out of his way to be extra out of pocket by £25 instead of £5.6.
Indeed. The common law duty to mitigate losses applies and in the event TfL or anyone is liable, it is the lower sum they are liable for.

Yes agreed. Unfortunately in my experience customers do not always act reasonably when there is an issue.
